As with many beloved childhood classics from the ’80s, Willow was recently mined for all the nostalgia it’s worth, getting a sequel streaming series on Disney Plus. Unlike many beloved childhood classics from the ’80s though, it was then killed in a tax fire in a sad reflection of where the television industry’s current priorities lie.

Dropping on Disney Plus in November 2022, it was then cancelled due to lack of viewers in March 2023, though showrunner Jonathan Kasdan said the second season had been written, and he believed it would one day be made. However, that hope turned out to be unfounded – in May 2023, the series was deleted from Disney Plus forever in a cost-saving measure. Now if you want to see the movie where it all started, you can watch Willow on Amazon Prime.
Watch Willow To Remember Val Kilmer
Though the series, which starred Warwick Davis from the original movie and newcomers Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, and Tony Revolori, is unlikely to ever return, fans can still take in the movie. Said fans might have a specific reason to tune in at the moment too, as the Willow movie also stars the late, great Val Kilmer as the swordsman Madmartigan.
In the 1988 movie, a farmer (Davis) is charged with transporting a baby princess across the realm, meeting just about every fantasy trope you can imagine along the way. The show follows the aftermath of the movie, with different characters (including the now teenage royal baby disguised as a kitchen maid) travelling to fight a great evil force unleashed in part by the events of the movie.

Willow is not the only series to suffer deletion in favour of tax write-off money. Warner Bros. recently endured a long saga with Looney Tunes where Coyote Vs Acme was shelved then saved by an external company. This came in the same week WB razed the Looney Tunes building to provide more space for HBO to shoot.
Though the movie is coming to Amazon, it is still available on Disney Plus, and will only be on Amazon for a brief window of 23 days. With Tombstone arriving on the platform on the same day, it may be that Amazon Prime is aiming to bring a collection of Val Kilmer classics to its services for fans still mourning the loss of the actor.
