Know What’s At Risk With Event Spaces

When looking ahead at your route through a shard, there’s a good chance that, depending on which path you take that you’ll have to deal with an event space. These event spaces contain a wide selection of different challenges, options, and often sacrifices.
Even though you nearly always have the opportunity to end up with some useful buffs or upgrades, there’s just as much chance that you could lose health, or even whole lives. If you’re struggling through a shard, and you’re looking for a less risky run, then you might want to avoid these event spaces if possible, since they can’t be skipped once you land on them.

Because of this, try and go for campfires after tough levels or event spaces where you are more likely to need to recover health and lives, and avoid them elsewhere if there is a preferable option.

Upgrade Priorities
Beef Up
It’s not always easy to work out where everything is in the hub world of Haste, and because of that, you might completely miss the small pavilion where all the friendly NPCs will congregate. Some will let you buy new abilities, but the most useful is The Captain, who lets you spend your antisparks on permanent upgrades.
These are costly, so the first few you choose are an important decision. It’s best to improve your health and get an extra life or two. This means that bosses at the end of shards will give you less trouble, and you just have a better chance of lasting longer in your runs.

Balance Speed And Health Items
Optimize Your Run
Shop spaces are some of the most important on a run in Haste, since you’ll be able to buy useful upgrade items from Gan to improve your skills. There is an impressive selection, but if you can afford to be picky, it’s best to buff your health and your speed.
Health items are an obvious pick, since more health is nearly always useful, and while speed and boost items might not be as obviously beneficial, these will help you outrun the void chasing you, therefore also helping you conserve your health as well.

If you feel like you never have enough sparks to afford the best items that Gan is selling, then it might be worth buying cheaper items that improve your speed early on in the run. While there are obvious benefits to going as fast as possible, one of the less obvious is the increase in ranking.

Go Around ‘Unavoidable’ Hills

The tutorial for Haste is deceptively simple, and while it will give you the pure basics you need to play Haste, it doesn’t give you any tips or tricks on top of this. The only advice you get is to very simply land on slopes and avoid landing on inclines.
It displays this concept in a very 2D fashion, and doesn’t encourage you to consider that you have a whole third dimension to play with. A common frustration with Haste, especially early on, is that sometimes it feels like you don’t have any control over avoiding an incline. However, if you want to avoid a bad ranking on your landing, then veer to the less steep sides of an incline, and you’ll likely get a better boost. By focusing on side-to-side in addition to just up and down, then you’ll do a better job of maintaining momentum.

Plan Your Route All At Once

One of the best aspects of Haste is the pacing, but this can be let down by how often you’ll find yourself returning to chartering your course through the shard level by level. However, if you want to avoid constantly going back to this menu, you can avoid this pace-breaker by planning your route from the start.
After beating the first level in a shard, you can plan out your course by going through the whole map and just clicking on the boss at the end. This means that every level from that point on will automatically load into the next. This can be risky since you might not be able to adapt as much, but you do have the option to cancel your route in the pause menu if you want to switch up where you’re going.

Switch Abilities For Different Bosses
Borrow Your Friend’s Powers
One element of Haste’s gameplay that is easy to overlook when you’re starting out are the abilities. These skills use up your energy, and Zoe’s Board is the default ability you have access to at the start of the game.
While the small boost this board gives you can be useful in the early game, you’ll want to replace it as soon as you can afford to. If a Jumper boss is giving you trouble, then you can use the Sage’s Cowl to jump over its wave attack, and if you’re having trouble keeping up with a Snake, then the Wraith’s Hourglass is perfect for readjusting and maneuvering.
