The answer is both yes and no. While each member’s birthdates are confirmed, there is one detail that prevents their star signs from being determined. Unless Oda has a twist in store for us, the planet that One Piece takes place on isn’t Earth. With that in mind, a quick lesson on the nature of astrology might be helpful. Astrology is the art of reading the sky. It has existed in many forms over the course of millennia, but for the purpose of this article, we’ll focus on western astrology. In a practice most readers will recognize, a person’s horoscope is determined by the positions of the planets relative to their location during the moment of their birth.
This personalized profile is believed by some to be incredibly accurate, while others brush the entire practice off as woo-woo nonsense. The more generalized form of this profiling is the assignment of a zodiac or star sign according to the date of one’s birth. Armed with this information, it’s easy to see how this divination practice might not be as potentially accurate on a planet surrounded by completely different stars. That being said, what’s the harm in looking up a few birthdays just for fun?

Monkey D. Luffy
May 5th – Taurus
Predictably, Luffy is born under a sign known for its stubbornness. It’s no secret that once Luffy sets his mind to something, nothing can change it. Reliability and loyalty are two more traits that the future pirate king displays. No matter how bleak a situation may seem, this Yonko will stop at nothing to protect his friends and achieve his goals.
These bulls also have a possessive streak, which Luffy shows any time someone stands between him and someone he loves. Speaking of those he loves, Taurus’ are also known for valuing physical touch. This is highlighted every time he drapes himself over and around his friends like a needy boa constrictor.
Roronoa Zoro
November 11th – Scorpio
The swordsman of the Strawhats could not fit his sign better if he had been written that way on purpose. Then again, knowing Oda, he likely was. Scorpios are identified as being brave and passionate, making them great friends. Their weaknesses include being distrustful and jealous as well. This certainly sounds like Roronoa’s relationship with his captain. He’s always suspicious of anyone trying to get close to Luffy, and is often visibly threatened whenever they succeed. This sign is also known for being argumentative and teasing. That certainly explains his interactions with Sanji.
Nami
July 3rd – Cancer
Commonly regarded as the most emotional sign, Cancers are stronger than many, including themselves, might think. This sign is often involved in the arts, being imaginative by nature. Nami’s aptitude for cartography is an excellent example of this trait. In addition to being incredibly persuasive, these tenacious crustaceans will often use manipulation as a tactic, something Nami has leaned on her entire life. While the navigator is known for being a coward, she will put her fear aside to fight for those that are important to her, another Cancer trait.
Usopp
April 1st – Taurus
What better birthday for the king of fibs than April Fool’s Day? Sharing a zodiac sign with his captain, Usopp embodies some of the signs’ mellower aspects. The sniper showcases this earth sign’s down-to-earth nature, often taking the role of the voice of reason. Taurus’ are often drawn to the act of bringing things into creation by their own hand. Whether that means building tools and inventions or taking a seed and nurturing it to grow, Usopp has the patience to take an idea and make it a reality. A fear of change is another quirk that the serial-liar possesses. He will always be the first to voice a complaint when he and his crew are taken off-course.
Vinsmoke Sanji
March 2nd – Pisces
The Love Cook could only be a water sign. A lover through and through, Sanji embodies this sign’s romantic nature. His empathy and desire to take care of the people around him also go in-line with what Pisces is all about. These fish desire to freely express themselves, sometimes hiding from reality in an attempt to do so. An image of young Sanji, sneaking away from his abusive father’s sight to cook in secret, comes to mind. Pisces hate being criticized, and so does this cook. Whether it’s his adoptive father, Zeff, his crewmate, Zoro, or really anyone that isn’t a woman, Sanji will not stay quiet under criticism.
Tony Tony Choper
December 24th – Capricorn
It should almost be expected that the ship’s resident reindeer was born on Christmas Eve. What’s interesting about Chopper being a Capricorn is the sign’s imagery; a goat with the tail of a fish, almost monstrous in nature. Considering this sign is sometimes known to be hiding a monster within, it really makes one wonder just how much thought Eiichiro Oda put into selecting each character’s birthday. Chopper even has horns, albeit different from those of a goat. A Capricorn will often tend to be practical and responsible, both qualities that every good doctor should have.
Nico Robin
February 6th – Aquarius
Independent and opaque, Robin is a textbook example of what an Aquarius can be. Members of this zodiac sign tend to be intellectuals, often eccentric ones to boot. The enigmatic archaeologist exemplifies these qualities perfectly. Despite their insistence on keeping others at arm’s length, these water signs will grow lonely if left on their own for too long. Logical and adaptable, Robin is able to look past outer appearances and hearsay to see who people truly are, allowing her to make real and lasting friends. With an Aquarius’ hatred of boredom, it’s good she found a fun group to hitch her boat to.
Franky
March 9th – Pisces
Another Pisces has joined the party. It’s no secret that Franky is a fan of romance, but that trait isn’t the strongest quality borrowed from his sign. What this cyborg exudes in excess is compassion. The shipwright and inventor has let his heart guide him time and time again.
He’s not afraid to let his tears fall when he’s been moved, and it really doesn’t take much to move him. Pisces hate to be alone, and Franky has always made a point to surround himself with people he can trust. He even called his old gang of misfits with nowhere else to go his family. When he decided to join Luffy, he brought that energy to his new friends, doing everything he could to make them feel loved.
Brook
April 3rd – Taurus
The third Taurus on the list, Brook displays one of the inclinations the previous two lean away from: romance. While Brook isn’t going about this in a way one might expect, he certainly isn’t shy about asking for what he wants. When he’s not requesting to see someone’s underwear, he’s losing himself in music. Not surprising for the ship’s musician, as well as a Taurus in general. His dedication to his promise to his former crew and Laboon is a wonderful illustration of his enduring loyalty, which he has now extended to his new nakama.
Jinbei
April 2nd – Taurus
In a crew with so many Taurus’, how does Jinbei stand out? His work ethic checks out, in addition to his loyalty. He literally disbanded his own crew and faced the wrath of Big Mom just to be able to join Luffy and the others. These, however, are not the qualities that shine through the most in the newest Strawhat. What he excels in is patience. Unlike some of the crew, Jinbei decided to join up long before he actually made the move. Making certain that he had neatly tied off all of his loose ends, the ship’s helmsman made a plan and enacted it with intention. Lacking the impulsivity of youth, the old man makes his choices with purpose. This levelheadedness is exactly what makes him an excellent addition to the team.
Oda Really Thinks of Everything
Looking into this facet of the crew’s characterization can only make one wonder how many foreshadowing hints might be found by delving deeper into this topic. Just the surface information about Chopper’s sign alone makes it almost certain that Oda didn’t even choose something as minute as birthdates at random. Who knew the creator of One Piece researched astrology on top of everything else he’s used as inspiration for his epic? Honestly, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point. The man never ceases to impress with his devotion to the details. Of course, he would incorporate each character’s zodiac placement into their development. Nothing less could be expected of the GOAT.
Plot Your Own Course
As fascinating as this information might be to One Piece fans, astrology can sometimes be a divisive topic. While some adhere to the practice with what could only be considered religious fervor, others see it as a charlatan’s tool for duping the naive. Most lie somewhere in the space between. Either way, it’s just one of a myriad of practices used to divine information that has been employed throughout the existence of humanity. It can be a lot of fun, but the important thing to keep in mind is that nothing is predetermined. Free will is what makes life worth living. Daily horoscopes and tarot readings are an interesting way to reexamine information, but should never be treated as a blueprint for how to live one’s life. One Piece is a literal testament to the importance of freedom, after all. Would Luffy let a few lights in the sky tell him what to do?
