Summary
- Magellan defeated 3 future Emperors in combat, showcasing his strength.
- Fans are divided on Magellan’s power, some view him as weak, others as top-tier.
- Despite his feats, Magellan is underrated and deserves more screen time.
When it comes to powerful characters in the world of One Piece, more often than not, there’s a pretty clear trend of who fans think are the strongest in the series. Between the Emperors, Admirals, and beyond, the top tiers of the series often have a massive group of supporters in the community backing them up when their strength is called into question. Whether a fan feels the Admirals are underrated or that the Emperors aren’t given enough credit, almost every strong character has plenty of fans to defend them.
However, one powerful character in the series, while they receive a fair amount of praise, isn’t discussed nearly as much as they should be. Sporting the feat of defeating three future Emperors in combat, in the realm of powerful One Piece characters, Magellan deserves more recognition. Although he may have been left behind with the modern scaling of One Piece, at one point in the series, the former Warden of Impel Down was one of the most frightening characters in the series.

Magellan Acted As The Primary Antagonist Of Impel Down
He Almost Felt Like An Unstoppable Force Throughout The Arc
During the Impel Down Arc of One Piece, while Luffy was attempting to break Ace out of prison, fans had the opportunity to meet Magellan, the Warden of the prison. While initially, he seemed like a character that Luffy, being the protagonist of One Piece, would defeat in order to save his brother, fans quickly learned that the Warden received his position for a reason. Sporting the powers of the Venom-Venom Fruit, Magellan proved to be too much for Luffy and easily defeated him in the arc. In fact, Luffy was closer to death at this point in the series than he had ever been before.
This is your sentence… intruder. – Magellan
However, his rampage doesn’t end there. In this same arc, Magellan was able to single-handedly defeat the future Emperor Blackbeard and his entire pre-time skip crew, with his extremely powerful Devil Fruit ability. Additionally, although it isn’t much of a feat, Magellan was able to beat pre-time skip Buggy as well. By defeating these three characters, Magellan has technically defeated three future Emperors of the series, albeit before two of them reserved considerable power-ups.
Magellan’s Strength Is Often Debated By Fans
It Is Undeniable That He Took Down Three Future Emperors
- Magellan Is Heavily Debated In Terms Of Strength
- Some Feel He May Be One Of The Strongest In The Navy
Still, while this is a reasonably difficult feat, many members of the One Piece community aren’t nearly as impressed by Magellan’s strength. In fact, many fans believe that Magellan is fairly weak and relies too heavily on his powerful One Piece Devil Fruit, making him a subpar physical combatant. Overall, these fans believe that to accomplish his feats, he mainly caught Luffy in a bad situation and surprise attacked Blackbeard and his crew.

The strongest pirate in the world is finally revealed. One Piece fans have been long awaiting this moment.
At the same time, due to his imposing presence and role as the Warden of Impel Down, other fans believe that Magellan is approaching the level of the top-tier fighters in the series. Some fans even go as far as saying that, outside the Hero of the Navy, Garp, he may be the strongest non-Admiral Marine in the series. Although the audience has a lot of time to spend with Magellan, his narrative throughout Impel Down shows that he is one of the strongest pre-time skip enemies Luffy fought.
Magellan Could Use More Screen Time In The Future
After This Fans Could More Accurately See His Power
No matter the view of Magellan’s strength, one thing is for certain, for a character that was able to interact directly and defeat the three future Emperors, the former Warden of Impel Down isn’t given enough screen time. Since his arc, Magellan has been related to the position of a background character that only shows up briefly. For many fans, this is disappointing as they were looking for a chance to see the full extent of his power when fighting a stronger opponent in the New World.
Hell’s Judgement! – Magellan
Still, at the very least, fans were given one arc to spend with one of the most dangerous foes Luffy has ever faced. However, as is the case with many other One Piece characters, like Enel, fans are always looking for more. Hopefully, by the end of the series, Magellan will return to the main story, impacting the Final Saga in a small way.
