Tales of the Shire and Ghost of Yotei Could Be in the Same Boat

Tales of the Shire and Ghost of Yotei Could Be in the Same Boat

Ghost of Yotei is one of the most anticipated AAA titles of the year, as it marked the official follow-up to 2020’s beloved Ghost of Tsushima. Right now, Ghost of Yotei has yet to lock in an official launch date, but if rumors prove true, both this sequel and upcoming cozy life sim Tales of the Shire could pad out the July calendar.

If Ghost of Yotei actually launches in July like rumors suggest, that’s one of the few things Tales of the Shire and the action adventure title share in common. Different genres and opposite approaches to graphics and gameplay make the two vastly different. However, when it comes to expected nods to its past lore, Ghost of Yotei and Tales of the Shire could share a compelling common ground.

Ghost of Trushsima’s Jin Sakai Feels Destined to Have a Small Presence

  • Ghost of Yotei is set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima.
  • The story takes place in the year 1603.
  • This year in history marked the beginning of the Edo period in Japan.

Because of the time jump, Jin Sakai is obviously long gone, but there is plenty of opportunity for brand-new protagonist Atsu to stumble upon nods to the original main character. References to Jin feel like a given, and there’s even the possibility that Atsu could be a descendant of the beloved character.

There has yet to be any official confirmation about whether Ghost of Yotei will showcase Jin’s legacy or not, but the thought is compelling. Atsu is going down a darker path than Jin, and the two characters having opposing stories will be fascinating to watch unfold when the game finally launches.

According to new information, Ghost of Yotei will revolve around Atsu’s mission to get revenge against the people who are responsible for killing her family.

The Lord of the Rings Presents Tales of the Shire With a Deep Well of References

Since the game puts players in the shoes of Hobbits, references to famous inhabitants of the Shire like Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam seem inevitable, depending on where the game sits in the timeline. There will hopefully be nods to plenty of Lord of the Rings characters, but especially the likes of Bilbo and Frodo.

Bilbo and Frodo are bona fide Hobbit legends, and leaving them out of a game like Tales of the Shire would be quite a surprise. The reputation of these two strangely mirrors Jin Sakai’s, putting these seemingly opposite games in a similar situation when it comes to character references.

When it comes to expected nods to its past lore, Ghost of Yotei and Tales of the Shire could share a compelling common ground.

Tales of the Shire is Weta Workshop’s first venture into video games. The special effects company helped bring the Peter Jackson films to life.

If Rumors Are True, July Could Be Great For Two Completely Different Fan-Bases

There may not be a lot of overlap between Tales of the Shire and Ghost of Yotei players, but if the two launch within the same month, it will be interesting to see them standing side-by-side on the calendar. If Ghost of Yotei is connected to Jin in any way, how Sucker Punch pulls such a tie-in off is bound to be interesting to experience. On the flip side, Tales of the Shire has a treasure trove of characters and points of lore to play around with, so it will be fascinating to see which parts of the franchise developer Weta Workshop chooses to reference.
