Switch 2 Games Cartridges Have A Max Capacity Of 64 GB, Says CDPR

Summary

  • Cyberounk 2077’s Switch 2 port comes in at 64 GB.
  • A CD Projekt Red community manager says that this is as big as a physical release on Switch 2 can get.
  • This means that the full game will be on the cartridge.

When a port of Cyberpunk 2077 was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, many started to joke about the new console not being able to handle it. As anyone who’s played the game after all the updates can attest to, it looks gorgeous and runs very well (results may vary on Xbox Series S). In fact, updates ceased on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2022, and the Phantom Liberty expansion never made it to last-gen either, as future updates were too demanding.

With all of this in mind, a representative of CD Projekt Red has explained how the Switch 2 will handle Cyberpunk 2077 – while also potentially confirming the max capacity of the Switch 2’s cartridges. Here, the rep says that the port uses all of the available space on the cartridge, and with the game having a confirmed size of 64 GB, it appears that this is the limit that other developers are working with, too.

Physical Switch 2 Game Releases Could Be Capped At 64 GB

As spotted by ResetEra user –R, this comes from YouTuber BeatEmUps, who previewed several Switch 2 games. One of these was the Cyberpunk 2077 port, and while playing, a CDPR community manager commented on how the game was ported to Switch 2.

“We specifically went for the highest capacity, so 64 GB,” he community manager shares. “It’s been tailor made for the Switch 2 hardware, utilising all its features that we can to get the best performance, get the best experience.”

They add that we can expect 30 FPS in quality mode, and 40 FPS in performance mode. This is a step down from other releases, which can reach at least 60 FPS in performance mode, but it’s still an improvement on the PS4 and Xbox One releases, as they never got the options.

The Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage.

Looking at the Switch 2 at large, this doesn’t mean that all games will be under 64 GB. We’re already seeing that many Switch 2 re-releases of original Switch games put the new content behind a digital download, with the boxes containing the original game and a redemption code. As per the Nintendo website, this extends to other releases, with some games having physical releases that are effectively just a code in a box. Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be one of these games, at least, with the CDPR rep assuring that the entire game is on the cartridge.
