Summary

  • If you were thinking about trading in your current Switch to put towards a Switch 2 this summer, you may want to reconsider if you’re a Pokemon or Animal Crossing fan.
  • Pointed out by Pokemon fans on Reddit, pretty much every game in the series doesn’t support cloud save backups, meaning the only way to move your save over if via System Transfer.
  • That requires you to have both Switches on hand and connected to the same Wi-Fi network, so if you trade your Switch in early, be prepared to kiss your saves goodbye.

Nintendo Switch 2 is just a few months away, which means those of you out there that are planning to get one will soon be going through the tricky process of switching consoles. Thankfully, cloud saves have made that process a lot easier, as it’s simply a case of uploading all your saves from your old Nintendo Switch, and then downloading them onto your Nintendo Switch 2.

For some, that process will happen sooner rather than later, as many will choose to trade in their old Nintendo Switch for a bit of cash towards a Switch 2, especially with how expensive it is. It’s a sensible move, though one which may not be for those of you out there that enjoy Pokemon or Animal Crossing.

Unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series X, not only games on Nintendo Switch have cloud backup. As explained by Reddit user Razorbeamz, there are actually quite a few big franchises that don’t let you upload saves to the cloud and download them on other systems, with Pokemon and Animal Crossing being two of the biggest.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A leaks have got Pokemon fans talking about new Mega Evolutions.

Currently, the only way to move your save games in pretty much every Pokemon title on Switch is to use a System Transfer, which requires you to have both the Switch with your save on it and the Switch you want to transfer the saves to on hand at the same time, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It’s the same for Animal Crossing: New Horizon too, which also requires the Island Transfer Tool.

Sure, you have Pokemon Home, but if you want to keep your items and saves across systems, you’ll need to keep your old Nintendo Switch on hand. There are a handful of other big games affected too, such as Splatoon 2 and Dark Souls: Remastered, and Nintendo does have a handy list of every title that doesn’t support cloud save backup. Just a little PSA to keep you from accidentally deleting your save files before Nintendo Switch 2’s big day arrives.
