As reported by Eurogamer, former Blizzard art director Bill Petras has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 54. Petras’ passing was first shared by former cinematic project director Harley Huggins II, who referred to Petras as a “game development legend” and praised the World of Warcraft art director as an “amazingly gifted artist.” Huggins also shared fond memories of his time working at Blizzard with Petras, with the two starting the same week and developing a close friendship during their time at the studio. Blizzard has not made an official statement about Petras’ passing at this time.

For many fans of Blizzard, Bill Petras will be remembered for his contribution to many of the developer’s most well-known franchises. Petras spent a combined period of nearly two decades at Blizzard starting in May 1997 until February 2005, then later rejoining the studio in January 2010 and staying with Blizzard until October 2021. The art director was also immortalized within the lore of the Overwatch franchise, with the “Petras Act” used against the titular group within Overwatch‘s story.
Petras’ legacy will live on through the games which he helped to create, with Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft continuing to flourish with new support. World of Warcraft debuted its newest expansion, The War Within, last year with another new expansion set to arrive in Summer 2025 in World of Warcraft: Midnight. Overwatch 2 has also continued to see new content added to the game, with a new Hero in Freja and a potential Gundam crossover set to launch later this month.
