Summary
- The good news is that your existing Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers will be compatible with the Switch 2.
- The bad news is that they won’t be able to wake the console up via the “Home” button if you have your Switch 2 docked.
- It’s an underrated feature for those who have their Nintendo Switch consoles in an entertainment center.
If there’s one thing that Nintendo did extremely well with the original Nintendo Switch — besides the games — it’s the sheer amount of customization it offered in the form of unique Joy-Con controllers. There were Joy-Cons dedicated to Animal Crossing, and Joy-Cons styled after Princess Peach.

I’ll Always Prefer Joy-Con To The Pro Controller
Conventional wisdom tells you the Pro Controller is the better option for the Nintendo Switch, but there is a magic to the Joy-Con that I love
That’s just a small sample of everything that was released over the original Switch’s lifetime. Seriously, just look at the options that TheGamer’s Ben Jessey categorized.
With the Switch 2 officially on the horizon, the good news is that all those Joy-Cons you collected won’t go to waste, as they’ll be compatible with the upcoming console. However, there will be one caveat.
Most People Didn’t Know The Feature Even Existed
First and foremost, the existing Joy-Con controllers you own will be compatible, according to an information guide shared on Nintendo’s website. The existing Pro Controller will also be compatible.
At the same time, though, if you are used to waking your Switch from Sleep Mode by pressing the “Home” button on a Joy-Con or Pro Controller, then that feature won’t carry over to the Switch 2. Only the Switch 2 versions of those accessories will carry that feature.
It doesn’t sound like a major dealbreaker, but for some it does represent an inconvenience, specifically if you have your Switch docked. Being able to simply grab the Pro Controller and turn on the console with one button press is an underrated feature. At the very least, it’s not like your existing controllers won’t be usable, which certainly takes some of the sting out of losing a hidden feature.
