Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is a brand-new IP from Naughty Dog, signaling the first fresh franchise since the introduction of The Last of Us. There were a lot of exciting announcements at last year’s Game Awards, but Intergalactic was definitely one of the most unexpected. While the hopes for a potential Last of Us Part 3 may have dwindled since this announcement, Intergalactic looks to be a promising story.
Right now, the majority of details surrounding Intergalactic are being kept under wraps by Naughty Dog. Not only is the game taking a big genre turn by going down the sci-fi route, but there also seems to be a compelling emphasis on melee over shooting mechanics. The wait for Intergalactic might be a long one, but when the sci-fi adventure finally sees the light of day, it will hopefully feature a popular Last of Us Part 2 mode on day one: No Return.

The Last of Us Part 2’s No Return Mode Should Be a New Standard For Future Naughty Dog Games
An Action-Packed Roguelike Experience
- No Return was introduced in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
- This remastered version of the game was released back in early 2024.
No Return brought an extra dose of action and sweat-inducing encounters to The Last of Us Part 2. This roguelike option gave the game an unexpected way to prolong the lifespan of Part 2, as it continues to be a fun pastime for a lot of fans of the series. However, one of the most shocking parts about No Return is that it took nearly four years for such a mode to make its debut.
Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us series premieres on April 13.
What Does No Return Offer?
- Players can choose a variety of characters to play besides Ellie, Joel, and Abby. Some of these characters include Dina, Jesse, and Tommy.
- Four different game modes: Assault, Hunted, Capture, and Holdout.
- Completing challenges awards players with special skins for characters.
Intergalactic Seems Perfect For a No Return Mode
An option like No Return is primed to be a great time in a sci-fi setting, but Intergalactic has an even bigger leg up on The Last of Us Part 2, and that’s combat diversity. In The Last of Us franchise, all weapons and combat have to be kept realistic in order to fit the world. Granted, Naughty Dog is skilled at making this realism incredibly fun, but Intergalactic presents the opportunity for the developer to play around with more out-of-this-world concepts.
From Intergalactic‘s teased laser sword to other futuristic melee weapons and guns, a No Return mode is filled with potential. Of course, there’s no way to know right now if Naughty Dog is set to bring its No Return mode to the action adventure title or not, but at this point, it would be surprising if left out.
Intergalactic‘s protagonist, Jordan, is played by Tati Gabrielle. She also takes on the role of Nora in season 2 of the live-action series.
The base has been built for No Return, so theoretically, it shouldn’t be that difficult to work it into Intergalactic. The mysterious nature of Intergalactic has made it that much more compelling, and its uncertain setting of Sempiria could boast a variety of fun locations to use as No Return levels, too.
The Wait For Intergalactic May Be a Grueling One
- Rumors claim Intergalactic may not arrive until 2027.
According to prominent insider Jason Schreier, Intergalactic may be two years away, at the earliest. That wait could easily be longer, too. Such claims should be taken with a grain of salt, but if the wait really is that lengthy, there’s no telling when Intergalactic will be ready. As time passes, the secrets of Intergalactic will slowly be revealed, and a brand-new version of No Return will hopefully be part of the experience.
