As it prepares to launch the next Battle Aces beta, developer Uncapped Games gives us a sneak peek at some of the new units coming to its fast-paced RTS. The upcoming strategy game, which combines a creative deckbuilding element with gameplay that draws inspiration from classics like Command and Conquer, has already shown plenty of promise. It’s certainly got the prestige behind it: senior game director David Kim is a former Blizzard veteran best known for his work as StarCraft 2’s lead multiplayer designer. Now, its next beta test is on the way, and you can sign up to take part.
Battle Aces strips out the fluff of the best RTS games in favor of snappy bouts of pure strategy. Battles are 1v1 or 2v2 and feature a ten-minute timer, simplifying the economy management and building elements in favor of a focus on smartly deploying and utilizing your forces. Rather than picking a preset faction, you instead choose a ‘deck’ of eight units, allowing you a much deeper level of customization in how you build your loadout.

The next Battle Aces beta is beginning on April 16, and Uncapped has now showcased two of the four additional units that will be joining the roster. The first is the Shade, a flying unit that specializes in demolishing groups of ground units. They’re small and mobile, perfect for employing in packs, and carry a deadly payload with high splash damage, allowing them to wipe out any forces with a tendency to cluster together. They’re an ideal counter to swarm strategies or builds that focus on ground supremacy.
Joining them is the Advanced Mortar, a ground-based unit that reminds me a little of Terran Siege tanks, but even more versatile. They’ll need a moment to set up and start unleashing attacks, but their long range combined with the ability to target both ground and air units with their twin cannons make them a devastating powerhouse. Get them in place before your opponent can react, and they’ll be hard-pressed to move you from your defensive position.
The new beta also includes an updated intelligence bar, more detailed in-game unit stats to help you keep track of what everything is capable of, and clear lists of strengths and weaknesses to make learning effective counters easier. The visuals have been polished up, and there’s an updated battle pass, along with the ability to access all units in the game after completing the Proving Grounds. If you took part in a previous beta, you can skip this step and have everything unlocked immediately.
The next Battle Aces beta test starts Wednesday April 16. You can sign up via the official website or register your interest via Steam if you want to take part.
