Nintendo recently unveiled a lineup of exciting games coming to its console over the next few years, including Tamagotchi Plaza. From digital toys to full-fledged video games, Tamagotchi has become a globally recognized name. Slated for release on June 27, 2025, Tamagotchi Plaza continues the tradition of delivering a beloved virtual pet experience in a world filled with quirky interactive characters and diverse customization options.
As the newest installment of the beloved shop simulator, Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop, which launched internationally on the Nintendo DS in 2005, Tamagotchi Plaza appears to build on these foundations. With plentiful shopping locations and over 100 Tamagotchi to play with, this franchise should particularly appeal to fans of Sunblink Entertainment and Sanrio’s Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Not only are both casual life simulation games, but they both highlight a cozy, whimsical world featuring relaxing gameplay and fun mini-games.

When Tamagotchi first launched, its digital pets didn’t have specific names. However, later titles and spin-offs, like Tamagotchi Connection in 2004, introduced names for the characters, giving them distinct personalities and making them more memorable. As a result, both Tamagotchi Plaza and Hello Kitty Island Adventure benefit from featuring recognizable characters with unique personality traits. To illustrate, some of the most iconic Tamagotchi characters featured in the games and shows over the years include, but are not limited to:
- Gozarutchi – a ninja-like Tamagotchi who is known to be kind to others but not so much to himself.
- Ichigotchi – a strawberry-themed Tamagotchi, Ichigotchi hails from Berry Town and is known for her song and dance, along with being cheerful and friendly.
- Kuchipatchi – a round, jellybean-shaped Tamagotchi; Kuchipatchi is a gentle soul, typically seen napping, daydreaming, and showcasing his love for food.
- Mametchi – the main protagonist of the Tamagotchi anime, Mametchi is kind, respectful, and intelligent but often quite serious.
- Memetchi – an orange light-bulb-shaped Tamagotchi with a feminine style often seen daydreaming, dancing, and dressing up.
- Otokitchi – a senior Tamagotchi, often depicted as the mother figure of the group; Otokitchi likes to help others find love.
- Violetchi – a pink Tamagotchi known for her fashion sense and elegant demeanor, Violetchi is very knowledgeable about flowers and gardening.
For Sanrio enthusiasts, some of these personality traits may remind them of the companions in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. On Friendship Island, players can befriend 13 island residents in the early stages but meet at least six more as they progress through the game and complete quests. At the beginning, the game introduces players to the following Sanrio characters:
- Badtz-maru – a mischievous and eccentric penguin, Batdz-maru can be standoffish and is highly independent.
- Chococat – a curious and loyal black cat known for trying new things and his love of technology.
- Cinnamoroll – a puppy with long ears; Cinnamoroll is shy, but always willing to help his friends.
- Hangyodon – a blue fish-like character with comedic tendencies but is a bit clumsy.
- Hello Kitty – a sweet and optimistic girl cat who is always friendly, bright, and energetic.
- Keroppi – a bubbly, cheerful frog with a love for games, swimming, and singing.
- Kuromi – despite her tomboyish exterior, Kuromi is secretly very sweet and enjoys romance stories and cooking.
- My Melody – a good-natured and honest bunny who is very sociable.
- Pekkle – a gentle, laid-back duck who enjoys tap dancing and singing.
- Pochacco – a friendly and loyal puppy who loves playing sports.
- Pompompurin – an easy-going golden retriever with a positive outlook on life who loves food and naptime.
- Retsuko – a timid and soft-spoken red panda, Retsuko is also known for having a temper.
- Tuxedosam – a polite penguin with a charming and classy style, Tuxedosam is very tidy, but is also a bit clumsy.
Along with both games sharing similarities to life simulation games like Animal Crossing, the personalities of these characters play a key role in bringing these digital worlds to life. Whether it’s Mametchi’s seriousness or Cinnamoroll’s shyness, these traits also influence how players interact with the game world around them and any decisions made thereafter. Similarly, players can look forward to delving into the whimsical world of Tamagotchi Plaza’s Wonder Shops, where they can transform their space into a bustling attraction. They’ll also have opportunities to solve problems, much like the effort that goes into revamping Friendship Island in Hello Kitty Island Adventure and completing quests for the betterment of the community.
