Light spoiler ahead for the final character mentioned here.
1
Steve – Jack Black
You have the always entertaining and hilarious Jack Black in the lead role of Steve from the Minecraft universe. Steve is the main protagonist/default skin in the video game, characterized by his iconic blue shirt and jeans, and the backstory here is that he gained access to the Overworld after acquiring the Orb of Dominance while mining a cave on Earth.
Being a gamer himself and having previously starred in video game adaptions like 2024’s Borderlands and 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jack Black’s portrayal of Steve is gold and will grace you with more awesome original songs, like Steve’s Lava Chicken. Black is also known for the Jumanji films, the Kung Fu Panda series, Tropic Thunder, School of Rock, Nacho Libre, Goosebumps, Shallow Hal, The Holiday, and, of course, his comedic rock duo Tenacious D.
The younger version of Steve is played by Bram Scott-Breheny.
2
Garrett – Jason Momoa
Partnered with Jack Black as the leading adult duo in A Minecraft Movie is someone who’s no stranger to starring in a Warner Bros. blockbuster, Jason Momoa. Momoa plays a gruff character clad in a pink leather jacket named Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, an owner of a video game store and former professional gaming champ who will eventually encounter Steve in the Overworld and might be the best equipped to survive it.

He also played Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and led TV series such as Stargate Atlantis, Apple TV+’s See, and Netflix’s Frontier. He’s also set for Martin Scorsese’s new Hawaiian crime epic and Apple TV+’s Hawaiian historical drama series, Chief of War.
The younger version of Garrett is played by Moana Williams.
3
Henry – Sebastian Hansen
Henry is the true main protagonist of A Minecraft Movie and is played by Sebastian Hansen. He’s a kid who has just lost his mom and ends up traveling with Momoa’s Garrett to the Overworld by accident, and it’s there he’ll encounter Steve while also being accompanied by characters Natalie and Dawn.
Sebastian Hansen is slowly rising to fame starring in A Minecraft Movie. His most notable role prior to this film was playing the younger child version of Clive Owen’s character, Scott Landon, in the Apple TV+ series Lisey’s Story, one of the finest Stephen King TV adaptations. Hansen also starred alongside Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson in the 2019 movie Just Mercy. His first role was Toddler Mozart in Amazon Prime’s Mozart in the Jungle.
4
Natalie – Emma Myers
Natalie is Henry’s older sister and is now responsible for taking care of him following their mother’s passing, which is why she will follow him and Garrett to the Overworld. Natalie is portrayed by actress Emma Myers, who you may already be familiar with from various Netflix series and movies.
Emma Myers stars alongside Jenna Ortega as Enid Sinclair in Netflix and Tim Burton’s Wednesday series, as well plays protagonist Pip Fitz-Amobi in the BBC and Netflix series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, based on the novels by Holly Jackson. You can also see more of Emma Myers in the Netflix comedy Family Switch and the Lifetime movies Girl in the Basement and A Taste of Christmas.
5
Dawn – Danielle Brooks
Alongside Henry, Natalie, and Garrett, a woman named Dawn will complete the quartet’s arrival in the Overworld. Dawn is a real estate agent on Earth interested in opening a petting zoo. She will ultimately be dragged into all the Minecraft business with Steve and the main characters, and she’s played by Danielle Brooks, who’s certainly had her fair share of experience with fantastic comedic ensembles.

She was also Sofia in the 2023 version of The Color Purple and voices Pearle in HBO Max’s Close Enough and Dr. Lillie Carter-Grant in Netflix’s Karma’s World.
6
Vice Principal Marlene – Jennifer Coolidge
Before Henry travels to the Overworld, he does attend school. Therefore, playing the vice principal of Henry’s school is none other than the iconic comedic actress Jennifer Coolidge. In the trailer and promotional material leading up to the film, you see Coolidge’s character, VP Marlene, strike a Minecraft villager with her car and then take him out on a date, a perfect Jennifer Coolidge situation.
Coolidge famously played Stifler’s Mom in American Pie and its sequels, as well as the most memorable character in the first two seasons of HBO Max’s The White Lotus, Tanya McQuoid, who delivers some of the best quotes. But she’s also Paulette in the Legally Blonde films, Bobbie Morganstern in the Friends spin-off Joey, Sophie Kachinsky in Two Broke Girls, and Karen Calhoun in Netflix’s The Watcher.
7
Malgosha – Rachel House
A Minecraft Movie has an evil queen of its own ruling the Nether, specifically a Piglin queen named Malgosha, who cruelly wants to end all the creativity in the Overworld. She carries the Staff of Dominance and sends her Piglin army after the main characters, yet she’s surprisingly voiced by the same actress behind Moana’s sweet and benevolent grandmother, Gramma Tala, from Disney’s Moana movies.
New Zealand actress Rachel House has also starred in Thor: Ragnarok as Topaz as well as returned to voice the role in Marvel’s What If…?, and then also re-teamed with Taika Waititi to star as Fianna in Apple TV+’s Time Bandits series and Ruth in Next Goal Wins. Rachel House also plays Tellem Bond in Apple TV+’s Foundation, Hampton in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Woodsy in Netflix’s Heartbreak High, and Shilo in Niki Caro’s Whale Rider.
The creature performer for Malgosha is Allan Henry, who was also the bear performer in Cocaine Bear and did stunt work in films like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Flash, Jumanji: The Next Level, and various MCU movies (including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame).
8
Nitwit – Matt Berry
Who’s the lucky villager who gets treated to a date with Jennifer Coolidge’s character after getting hit by her car in A Minecraft Movie? Why, that would be none other than the green-robed villager, Nitwit, voiced by the superb comedic talent of Matt Berry.
Matt Berry is no stranger to voice roles or video game adaptations. His character in Amazon Prime’s Fallout series, Sebastien Leslie, became the voice of Mr. Handy robots, including Snip Snip. He also voices Shlub in Hulu’s Krapopolis, Paddler in The Wild Robot, and 8D8 in The Book of Boba Fett. However, Matt Berry is famously known for the role of vampire Laszlo Cravensworth in FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
The on-set performer for Nitwit is actor Bret McKenzie, who is mainly known for his role as Bret in the comedy TV show Flight of the Conchords, which he co-created and co-stars with Jemaine Clement (an actor also appearing in A Minecraft Movie), as well as Lindir in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
9
General Chungus – Jared Hess
Malgosha’s primary minion to lead the Piglin army is the hilariously named General Chungus, and you’ll be surprised to know that this fiendish Nether pig mob warrior is voiced by none other than the director of A Minecraft Movie himself, Jared Hess.

But Jared Hess’s best and most famous film to date is Napoleon Dynamite, starring Jon Heder as the titular character and Jon Gries as Uncle Rico (an actor who has a major connection to Jennifer Coolidge’s character in The White Lotus).
10
Daryl And Bruce – Jemaine Clement
Jemaine Clement appears in two roles in A Minecraft Movie, playing a storage auctioneer named Daryl and voicing a character named Bruce. It’s an Easter egg in itself that you have Jemaine Clement alongside Matt Berry, as he’s the creator and executive producer of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows and a former guest star on the show. The duo also starred together in 2018’s An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn.
Clement is a New Zealand comedian and actor best known for playing the vampire Vladislav in Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows, Oliver Bird in Marvel and FX’s Legion TV show, Dr. Ian Garvin in Avatar: The Way of Water, Tamatoa in Disney’s animated Moana films, Nigel the Cockatoo in the Rio movies, and Lou in the animated kids show Kiri and Lou. Clement also previously worked with Jared Hess in Gentlemen Broncos and the animated Napoleon Dynamite series.
11
Alex – Kate McKinnon
Alex is a ginger-haired character who comes at the end of A Minecraft Movie during the post-credits scene, and it’s revealed she is now the owner of the house where Steve formerly lived before being stuck in the Overworld. Her name and hair color are highly significant because Alex was the second player skin released in the game and is teased to be a main character in a future installment. Alex is played by SNL alum Kate McKinnon.
Aside from performing on 11 seasons of SNL, Kate McKinnon was also Carole Baskin in Peacock’s Joe vs. Carole, Weird Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, Jillian Holtzmann in Ghostbusters, Jess Carr in Bombshell, the voice of Lulu in DC’s League of Super-Pets, and Jandice in Jared Hess’ Masterminds.
