Ubisoft Clarifies ‘Unintended’ Far Cry 4 Censorship

Ubisoft has confirmed that the recent update to Far Cry 4 that censored some parts of the game was “unintended,” and a fix has already been applied to reverse the changes. The Far Cry 4 update censored some elements of nudity in the decade-old title, leaving some fans worried about the ethics of changing games in such a way so long after release.

Far Cry 4 was initially released in November 2014 to critical and commercial success. It was its predecessor, Far Cry 3, that helped the franchise’s popularity explode, but Far Cry 4‘s quality ensured it was here to stay. Far Cry 4‘s Pagan Min is another iconic villain in the series, which is some feat after following Vaas from Far Cry 3. There have been numerous Far Cry titles in the years since, but for many, the fourth entry is a high point for the series.

Ubisoft recently released an update to Far Cry 4 which censored some nudity elements. Given the age of this 2014 Far Cry game, it was a surprise for Ubisoft to revisit it to make this change. However, in a comment on the Far Cry subreddit, a Ubisoft community developer has clarified that “there was a mistake during a recent update: content meant specifically for the Japanese version of the game was mistakenly uploaded to the worldwide (WW) version on Steam. This resulted in unintended changes, including censored models and assets.”

‘Unintended’ Far Cry 4 Censorship Has Been Fixed

A second comment by the community developer also mentioned that this “wasn’t a new change, it was existing content from the Japanese version that has been live for years.” However, an update has already been pushed to Far Cry 4 to reverse the changes, with the correct worldwide data now uploaded to Steam, with confirmation that “there are no plans to censor Far Cry at any time.” Players can enjoy one of the best Far Cry stories with the original experience fully intact.

Ubisoft has yet to confirm any plans to release Far Cry 7, but fans are waiting patiently for any potential news of a sequel. There were rumors recently that a Far Cry extraction shooter has been rebooted at Ubisoft, but this should be taken with a pinch of salt as nothing has been confirmed. The most recent game in the series, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021. The longest gap between mainline entries in the series currently stands at four years, and if no new game is released this year, then this record will be broken.
