Ubisoft Calls Far Cry 4’s Censored Nudity Update A “Mistake”

Ubisoft Calls Far Cry 4's Censored Nudity Update A "Mistake"

Summary

  • Far Cry 4 was never intended to be censored, Ubisoft says, and has since been re-patched to include nudity.
  • Calling it an “honest mistake,” Ubisoft clarified that the Japanese version of the game had been pushed out globally by mistake.
  • The patch removed nudity from the decade-plus-old game, but other Far Cry titles, which also have nudity, weren’t impacted.

While most of the gaming world is patiently waiting for Far Cry 7, which has been codenamed “Blackbird,” a portion of the fanbase spent their Friday rallying against Ubisoft after Far Cry 4 was seemingly censored over a decade after its release.

Far Cry 4 Was The End Of Far Cry

As Far Cry 4 turns ten, let’s look back at the last great Far Cry game.

As it turns out, though, it was a “mistake,” and there are “no plans” to retroactively censor past Far Cry titles. In other words, nudity is back in-game.

Ubisoft Quickly Cleared The Air About Far Cry 4’s Status

After news quickly spread about a potential case of retroactive censorship, the official Far Cry Twitter account, which Ubisoft runs, quickly put those concerns to bed.

Specifically, content that was intended for the Japanese version of the game, which has been censored since launch, was accidentally sent to the global version of the game. The issue has since been rectified, with the correct files being pushed where necessary.

“This was not an intentional update for global players, and the issue has already been corrected,” a follow-up post read.

Several other follow-up replies noted that it was an “honest mistake,” with the account consistently clarifying that at no point did its developers ever intend on censoring the decade-plus-old game out of the blue.

Fans Quickly Noticed Nudity Had Gone Missing

For whatever reason, a fan had noticed that in a scene where a character originally shows bare breasts, it had been updated to feature a makeshift bra. Elsewhere, a separate scene where the playable character, Ajay, has his genitals visible had also been updated to include a loincloth.

Immediately following the discovery, fans began to incorrectly point the figure at Tencent, which recently created a subsidiary with Ubisoft that will focus on several franchises, including Far Cry.

“Tencent finally invest in Ubisoft and then this happens, hmmm,” one commenter wrote.

Of course, in the end, the company’s involvement with Tencent had nothing to do with the patch. Had that been the case, then several other Ubisoft titles would’ve faced the same result, including other Far Cry games. Things are resolved and nudity is once again a thing.
