  • Sanrio characters like Wish Me Mell, Moppu, and Big Challenges could make great Animal Crossing villagers.
  • Creativity can be shown in designing new Sanrio-based villagers to add a fresh perspective to the game.
  • Villagers inspired by characters like Gudetama could bring unique designs and witty dialogue to the game.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf introduced six villagers based on popular Sanrio characters – Rilla (Hello Kitty), Marty (Pompompurin), Étoile (Little Twin Stars), Chai (Cinnamoroll), Chelsea (My Melody), and Toby (Keroppi) – and they instantly became fan-favorites because of their unique designs and matching furniture sets.

Who Was The First Sanrio Character?

While the current figurehead, Hello Kitty isn’t actually the first Sanrio character. Here, you can learn who is!

However, there are hundreds and hundreds of other Sanrio characters who would also make perfect Animal Crossing villagers. There’s a lot of opportunity to get creative with their designs and add a fresh perspective to the games. From popular characters to more underrated hidden gems, these characters would be a great new addition to the villager roster.

Wish Me Mell

Suggested Species

Squirrel

Suggested Personality

Normal

Wish Me Mell is an adorable white fluffy rabbit with pink accents and a rainbow tail. It would be too obvious for her villager to be a rabbit, but another great fit would be as a squirrel villager. Since squirrel villagers have such prominent tails, these would be the perfect opportunity to show off her multicoloured one.

Wish Me Mell’s character profile describes her as absent-minded but kind, so she’d fit right in with the other Normal-type villagers. She likes to write letters and collect stamps, so in addition to a furniture set, she could have special paper, postcards, and stamps for you to use with her branding on it.

9

Moppu

Suggested Species

Penguin

Suggested Personality

Lazy

Moppu is an adorable polar bear who is always wearing his comfort blanket. He’s described as lazy and skilled at being able to “sleep forever” on his official Sanrio character profile, so there’s no question about personality type his villager would be – it’s Lazy, if you didn’t guess.

As Moppu is a polar bear, an animal that lives in cold climates, his villager counterpart could be a penguin to reference this part of his character. They’d need to wear his signature blanket too, of course, and their furniture set could include a blanket fort and piles of blankets.

Big Challenges

Suggested Species

Frog

Suggested Personality

Smug

There’s not a lot of information about Big Challenges, other than the fact he has a “unique smile”, according to his official profile. He’s seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to his character in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, so why not continue that trend with an Animal Crossing villager of his own?

Big Challenges’ design is quite basic – he’s a green crocodile – so we’ll need to use some creative liberty here. Since he’s known for his silly face and big smile, a villager inspired by him could be a frog, as they definitely have that same energy. His personality could be Smug, as he seems quite dapper.

7

Hummingmint

Suggested Species

Bird

Suggested Personality

Snooty

Hummingmint is a dainty fawn who has heart-shaped spots in her fur and wears a pastel blue ribbon. Her design is just adorable all around. Her name is close to ‘hummingbird’, so a villager based on her could be a bird, perhaps with a heart-shaped spot on her face.

As Hummingmint appears to love keeping up with her appearance and the accessories she wears, her villager counterpart could be a Snooty personality type. Her furniture set would use pastel colours, with lots of ribbons and bows in the details.

6

Gaopowerroo

Suggested Species

Cat

Suggested Personality

Jock

Gaopowerroo is a dinosaur, and a very cute one at that. According to his Sanrio profile, he likes to solve problems by roaring – we’re sure that’s to varied success… He has a friendly and upbeat attitude, but seems a little empty-headed, so we’ll put his villager counterpart in the Jock category.

For animal species, his villager could be a cat, just because Gaopowerroo’s ears already kind of look like cat ears, so why not lean into it? He loves omelette rice and even lives on Omurice Island, so his furniture could include kitchen items and a few decorative omelette rice meals.

5

Usahana

Suggested Species

Eagle

Suggested Personality

Peppy

Usahana is a rabbit whose fur is made up of all different colours and she wears an orange flower on her head. At first glance, she looks very similar to the Lazy villager, Stitches, but they have very different personalities.

Usahana’s Sanrio profile says she dreams of becoming a ballerina and is full of energy, which is quite the opposite to Stitches, whose passions are food and bugs. Usahana’s villager counterpart could be a Peppy eagle, as they’re quite graceful creatures, just like ballerinas.

4

Littleforestfellow

Suggested Species

Wolf

Suggested Personality

Lazy

Littleforestfellow is My Melody’s cousin, and is always wearing the red hood that My Melody gave him. With this in mind, Littleforestfellow’s villager counterpart could be a wolf villager, calling back to the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood.

His villager’s personality would be Lazy, and his furniture set would be forest-themed. There’s already some great mushroom furniture in the series, so Littleforestfellow’s would match perfectly and be a great addition to cottage core designs.

3

Hangyodon

Hangyodon on an Animal Crossing printed background.

Suggested Species

Octopus

Suggested Personality

Smug

Hangyodon is a blue sea monster who has dreams of becoming a comedian. As the Sanrio villagers aren’t a literal adaptation of the character, his villager could actually be Sayuri, his octopus best friend, repping all of Hangyodon’s merch.

There are only a few octopus villagers in the series currently, so a new addition there would be appreciated by fans, too. The villager’s furniture could be under-the-sea themed, similar to the mermaid furniture set, with some comedian equipment, like a microphone, included too.

2

Kuromi

Kuromi on an Animal Crossing printed background.

Suggested Species

Deer

Suggested Personality

Sisterly

With My Melody already being represented in the series with Chelsea, it only makes sense for her counterpart, Kuromi, to be added too. Her personality is already pretty much exactly like a Sisterly villager, and she could be a deer to match Chelsea.

Her furniture set would be gloriously gothic, with dark purple and black accents galore. Having both Chelsea and a Kuromi-themed villager in your or on your island would be similar to inviting Nan and Chevre, who are pen pals and definitely shouldn’t be separated.

1

Gudetama

Gudetama on an Animal Crossing printed background.

Suggested Species

Chicken

Suggested Personality

Lazy

How hasn’t there been a villager based on Gudetama yet? The concept practically writes itself. Gudetama is an egg yolk. There are chicken villagers in Animal Crossing. Need we spell it out any further?

The villager, of course, would be bright yellow, and they could have a hat that resembles a cracked eggshell. And, of course, it would only be right for them to crack egg-related jokes in their dialogue. The furniture set would also be all yellow, and it would be eggcellent. Okay, we’ll stop now.
