The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered has only been on Steam for a single day, but there’s already a mod that lets you play the campaign as Joel instead of Ellie.
While The Last of Us Part 2 is widely regarded as one of PlayStation’s most critically-acclaimed games of all time, it’s fair to say that a lot of people really don’t get on with it. The reason for this has been clear to everyone from the moment the game launched, as it all centres around the fate of one particular character.

I am, of course, talking about what happens to The Last of Us’ protagonist and loveable father figure, Joel, who gets murdered by Abby early on in the game. Many hoped that Joel would be properly playable at some point and a key figure in the story (which he still is, but you know what I mean), but that isn’t what happened at all.
As much as I love The Last of Us Part 2, I can’t blame anyone for being a little miffed about the edited trailers.
The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered Already Has A Mod That Replaces Ellie With Joel

Even all these years after The Last of Us Part 2’s launch, there are still a lot of fans of the first game who hate the sequel for what it did to Joel. Well, if you’re one of those fans who refuse to fight against Clickers and the WLF unless it’s as Joel, you’ll be happy to know there’s already a mod that fixes that.
Yesterday, the PC port of The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered released on Steam, where it’s getting mostly positive reviews so far, unlike Spider-Man 2 and Until Dawn. Even though it’s barely been 24 hours since the port went live, there are already a bunch of mods live for The Last of Us Part 2, including one that lets you pretend all the above never happened.
The mod, aptly titled “Play as Joel – Character Swap”, comes from Nexus Mods creator Lambi79 and does exactly what it says on the tin by replacing Ellie with Joel. This version of Joel seems to be the one from the No Return mode, as Lambi79 has included all of his unlockable skins in different packs.
There are a few understandable caveats to the mod, though. Certain sections of the game can only be played as Ellie and break with Joel’s model, requiring you to switch back to her. You’ll also need to have the “Skins” tab in extras unlocked, which requires completing the game once or getting crafty with the debug menu or other mods.
Even with those hurdles in mind, it’s a neat mod and was always going to be modded into the game at one point or another. Just make sure you’re playing as Joel for the fun of it, and not because of some weird vendetta against the story.
