Summary
- Star Citizen’s crowdfunding surpasses $800 million.
- This has been raised through both donations and people paying to access the playable Alpha.
- The devs have also announced that this year’s CitizenCon will be a digital event.
Star Citizen might have the most infamous crowdfunding effort in gaming history. Opening in 2012, the money came pouring in, even as the game missed its 2014 release date. Now, 13 years after its reveal, the game has a playable Alpha build but still no full launch in sight – and yet the crowdfund continues to be a huge success.
Once more, Star Citizen has reached a milestone, as more than $800 million has been raised by the community to develop the game. However, as reported by Simulation Daily, this comes as developer Cloud Imperium Games confirms that CitizenCon will not be held in-person this year, so the team can instead focus on development.

At the time of writing, Star Citizen has raised $801,025,246. This doesn’t just come through donations but also access to the Alpha, as you have to put down at least $45 to start playing. After that, you can make more in-game purchases, which also raises this figure.
However, with CitizenCon being reworked, it does seem that the developer is eager not to miss another release window. Squadron 42, a single-player game set in the Star Citizen universe, is set to launch in 2026, and this is cited as the reason why CitizenCon will be a digital event this year.
“The team is hard at work on our upcoming major milestones, and energy is high as we push forward,” reads a statement on the Star Citizen website. “Squadron 42 is progressing well as we work toward next year’s release, and across Star Citizen our focus remains on delivering meaningful, measurable improvements and fresh content with every patch.
“While there won’t be a traditional in-person CitizenCon in 2025, we’re thrilled to introduce CitizenCon Direct – a special digital showcase that brings the excitement straight to you. This year’s format helps us keep the momentum going while still giving the community something truly special to look forward to.”
