Solo Leveling’s Most Evil Character Won’t Stop Until Korea’s Strongest Hunter Is Dead and Gone

Summary

  • Hwang Dong-Soo seeks revenge against Jin-Woo for his brother’s death, facing consequences.
  • Despite his plans, Dong-Soo loses to Jin-Woo and becomes his loyal servant, Greed.
  • Dong-Soo’s loss reminds hunters not to mess with Jin-Woo and his loved ones.

Sung Jin-Woo is the man of the hour after the events of the Jeju Island story arc in Solo Leveling. While most are in awe of his outrageous abilities, others, particularly this evil character, wish him dead and gone. This shady figure has always been bothered by Jin-Woo’s presence ever since the beginning. With a strong desire for vengeance, this evil character plans to cause trouble for Jin-Woo despite the vast difference in their strength.

Messing with Jin-Woo is perhaps the most foolish thing a hunter can do in Solo Leveling. Not only do they anger Jin-Woo, but they also unnecessarily risk their lives in the line for the sake of their pride and ego. It doesn’t matter whether Jin-Woo dislikes killing, for the system dictates his actions, forcing him to kill humans to save his life. Understandably, these foolish hunters are not aware of the system, leading to their tragic demise.

The Younger Hwang Takes Matter into His Hands

  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 7
  • First Webtoon Appearance: Chapter 24
  • Hunter Rank: S-Rank
  • Hunter Guild: Scavenger Guild

Hwang Dong-Soo is infamous as the one and only S-rank hunter who abandoned Korea to join the Scavenger Guild in America. He is the younger brother of Hwang Dong-Suk, a C-rank hunter with a particularly interesting strike team. Despite their troubled relationship, Dong-Soo won’t let things slide if someone harms his older brother. Sure enough, Dong-Soo soon finds himself chasing after Jin-Woo and Jin-Ho, the two people responsible for the death of Dong-Suk and his group.

“Did I have a bad dream? My eyes are wet.”—Hwang Dong-Soo

As an S-rank hunter who takes immense pride in his abilities, Dong-Soo flies straight to Korea to lay his hands on Jin-Woo as soon as he is free from guild responsibilities. Luckily, their supposed encounter is avoided as Jin-Woo is busy fighting the ice elves and the ice bears inside the Red Gate. If it weren’t for the appearance of the gate, Jin-Woo and Dong-Soo’s altercation would have been inevitable.

Hwang Dong-Soo’s Revenge Plot

Even Thomas Andre Can’t Stop Him

Hwang Dongsoo

Hwang Dong-Soo’s hatred towards Jin-Woo intensifies after the latter’s father, Sung Il-Hwan, beats him to a pulp when he informs him that his son is already dead. Still, Dong-Soo refuses to back down and goes on to plot his revenge against Jin-Woo, disregarding some strong warnings from Thomas Andre, the strongest national-level hunter himself. In other words, nobody can stop Dong-Soo from seeking revenge against Jin-Woo.

“They’re truly brothers bound by blood.”—Woo Jin-Chul to Hwang Brothers

Before the fourth Jeju Island raid, Dong-Soo offers to join the raid party not because he wants to kill the Ant Queen and end her colony, but because he wants to return to Korea and kill Jin-Woo. Unfortunately for him, Thomas Andre is aware of his ulterior motives, as is Go Gun-Hee, who bans him from returning to Korea, frustrating Dong-Soo even more. Despite this, Dong-Soo begins to hatch another plan to lure Jin-Woo when he receives news of Jin-Woo’s visit to America.

The Ahjin guild, led by Jin-Woo and Jin-Ho, attends the International Guild Conference in America for the first time. For Dong-Soo, Jin-Woo’s visit is the perfect opportunity to finally pin him down and get his revenge regardless of anything Thomas Andre says. He believes Thomas is his trump card against Jin-Woo, after all. The moment Jin-Woo lays his hands on him, Dong-Soo knows that Thomas will have no choice but to interfere and fight on his behalf.

During the International Guild Conference Arc, Dong-Soo kidnaps Jin-Ho and tortures him while waiting for Jin-Woo’s arrival. He wants to find out the truth about what happened to his brother, but Jin-Ho refuses to tell him the exact story. Later, Jin-Woo arrives through shadow exchange, and upon seeing Jin-Ho’s bruises, all hell breaks loose. In an instant, Dong-Soo and his sidekicks face the wrath of Jin-Woo, who unleashes his fury without hesitation.

“I knew it. You’re the one who killed my brother, Hwang Dong-Suk. Isn’t that right?”—Dong-Soo to Jin-Woo

Hwang Dong-Soo vs. Sung Jin-Woo

The Obvious Winner

While Dong-Soo and Jin-Woo are both S-rank hunters, there’s a huge difference in their strength. No matter how hard Dong-Soo fights against his opponent, Jin-Woo’s strength is on an entirely different level. It’s unfortunate that Solo Leveling fans even began to address Dong-Soo as the “punching bag of the Sung family” for receiving not just Jin-Woo’s punches but also Il-Hwan’s attacks. In the end, Dong-Soo’s revenge backfires to the point that he loses his life, and Thomas Andre breaks every bone in his body after fighting Jin-Woo.

However, Jin-Woo will not let Dong-Soo’s spirit rest that easily, as he will use Shadow Extraction on his lifeless body and raise him from the dead. Now known as Greed in the later events of Solo Leveling, Dong-Soo has become Jin-Woo’s loyal servant, fighting by his side. It’s unfortunate, but Dong-Soo’s loss against Jin-Woo is a strong reminder to other hunters not to mess with the Shadow Monarch and his loved ones.
