FromSoftware Still Intends To "Actively Develop" Single Player Games

Summary

  • The Duskbloods director Hidetaka Miyazaki has addressed concerns over FromSoftware’s recent shift into multiplayer games.
  • In a new interview, Miyazaki says that FroMSoftware is still going to “actively develop single-player-focused games” that will “embrace our more traditional style”.

The Duskbloods was definitely one of the more interesting announcements during this week’s Nintendo Direct, as not many people expected a new FromSoftware IP to be exclusive to a Nintendo console. There was a lot of excitement during its initial reveal, understandably, but a lot of it fell off after FromSoftware revealed that The Duskbloods is actually a PvPvE game with a multiplayer focus.

With Elden Ring: Nightreign coming next month, and The Duskbloods set to release in 2026, a lot of concern rose about FromSoftware new focus on multiplayer experiences, and whether we’d actually see another single player game from the studio any time soon. Thankfully, Hidetaka Miyazaki has addressed those worries in a new interview.

In a Creator’s Voice blog post (thanks Rock, Paper, Shotgun), Miyazaki is asked whether he’s always had the desire to make a PvPvE game, to which he responds that he’s been allowed to experiment with “a broad range of game-design ideas” thanks to the genre.

“This is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward.”

He then follows that up, completely unprompted, with a statement for those worried about FromSoftware’s shift to multiplayer. He states that even though The Duskbloods is multiplayer, FromSoftware still intends to “actively develop single-player-focused games” that will “embrace our more traditional style”.

So, all of you worried that FromSoftware has become obsessed with live-service can now breathe a sigh of relief. It looks like both Elden Ring: Nightreign are smaller, more experimental games, and that the next big FromSoftware project will be more traditional. It was recently pointed out that FromSoftware has astonishing output, with almost yearly releases ever since 2015, so we shouldn’t be waiting too much longer for another single player FromSoft game.
