On the r/FinalFantasy subreddit, a Reddit user named Mattnificent shared several pictures of their Final Fantasy chess piece set, including close-ups. The chess pieces were modeled in Autodesk’s Maya program and then 3D printed with resin. Each chess piece was placed on a black or a white platform, following chess rules. Mattnificent chose the Moogles to serve as Pawns, with 16 total on the board.

The Bomb was picked as the Rook, while the Chocobo and the Cactuar were assigned the respective roles of Knight and Bishop. The monstrous Behemoth was chosen as the Queen piece, and the King’s role was fulfilled by the appropriately-named Tonberry King. The bottom side of each piece also had a symbol to match its role, with the white Behemoth having a dark-colored Queen’s crown as its indicator.
Mattnificent also shared white and black storage cases that housed each chess piece when not in use, along with a portable chess board for scale. Final Fantasy fans complimented Mattnificent for their work, with some remarking how the Tonberry King was a fitting choice due to its name and slow movement speed. Other fans asked if Mattnificent had any chess pieces for sale, which the artist later confirmed.
