The Sims: Makin’ Magic brings the occult to your Sims’ lives. With the pack, you can visit the mystical Magic Town to meet new townies, line your pockets with MagiCoins, and peruse the wares of a range of vendors. You can even pick up your own cute new dragon pet.
Dragons are challenging housemates but make delightful companions nonetheless, so long as you come equipped with tasty treats and fire alarms. It’s not obvious that you can have a dragon, let alone how to get one, so here are some tips for finding your new friend.
How To Buy A Dragon Egg
You have to incubate a dragon egg to get your pet dragon. To buy one, you need to travel to Magic Town using either a taxi or the Hole In The Ground. Then, look out for Vicki Vampiress’ cart of wares. The dragon egg item is called the Dragon Nest.
Once you’ve bought your nest you’ll have to head home, where your Sim will autonomously take it out of their inventory. It starts incubating as soon as it gets placed on the ground.
If your Sim places the nest somewhere accessible, you can just hop into Buy or Build Mode to move it.
Where To Find Vicki Vampiress’ Cart
Vicki’s cart, All Things Draconic, can be found on a couple of lots in Magic Town:
Name |
Lot |
A Spooktacular Spot |
93 Calamity Forest |
Vernon’s Vault |
94 Calamity Forest |
They’re both on the southwestern side of the map, side-by-side.
How Much Do Dragon Eggs Cost?
Buying a dragon nest from Vicki will set you back by 49 MagiCoins. MagiCoins are the currency used in Magic Town, and you can earn them by interacting with the magical world around you. This includes duelling, snake-charming, and performing.
You get 35 MagiCoins from the starter kit you receive when you load up a new household, which gets you most of the way to a dragon.
You’ll need more not only to make up the difference but also to get some dragon essentials for your new pyromaniac bundle of joy.
As well as dragon nests, Vicki sells some other goodies you might want to get a hold of ahead of bringing home your new scaly household member. She sells chew toys and treats, which can be given to your dragons once they’re hatched.
Make sure you stock up on dragon items so you can save yourself a trip back to Magic Town.
All Dragon Types
There are three types of dragons you can have as a pet:
Name |
Colour |
Temperament |
Burnie |
Red |
Burnie is a fiery one – as the name may suggest. Make sure you have fire alarms everywhere. |
Pyritie |
Yellow |
This golden dragon is more reserved than Burnie, but don’t be fooled: they’ll still burn the place down if left alone for too long. |
Torch |
Purple |
Torch is the calmest of this scaly bunch and is the least likely to turn your belongings into ash and dust. It’s not impossible, though. |
Although it’s useful to have a dragon that doesn’t burn the house down so quickly, it’s also tough to know exactly how dragons are feeling – especially when they aren’t quick to singe the sofa – as you can’t see their motives.
This means that timid Torch might be tougher to take care of in some ways, as it’ll take longer for you to figure out what’s going on with them. But it probably pays off insofar as they have the fewest arsonist tendencies of all the dragons.
How To Get Each Type Of Dragon
The colour of your dragon is decided by how much you interact with them in the nest. Basically, they start off as red and turn yellow, then purple, as you spend time with them.
Your Sim can cradle, rotate, and play music to dragon nests. Each time they do one of these things counts as an interaction. So, spend very little time with your dragon nest if you want a red dragon, but fuss them constantly for a purple one.
The yellow dragon is very hard to get as you have to hit the sweet spot in the middle.
How Long Does It Take For A Dragon To Hatch?
It takes about two days for your dragon to be ready to hatch. When they’re ready, the mini-cam in the corner will tell you. You can’t buy them pre-hatched, so you need to wait patiently to meet your new pet.
How To Care For Your Dragon
Dragons in The Sims 1 are quite straightforward to take care of in some senses, as they only have three needs: Hunger, Energy, and Fun. They’re also fairly autonomous, as they’ll often find food to snack on (for better or for worse).
Dragons eat dragon treats, spoiled human food, and piles of garbage. They’ll also sometimes eat from pet food bowls, so if you have Unleashed (Or The Sims: Legacy Edition) then you’re best off placing bowls in Buy Mode and filling them up for them often.
They also love to tear up and eat your outdoor flower beds. This is inconvenient, but it’s better they do that then get hungry and burn the place down.
They’ll fill up their Energy motive mostly by themselves if you leave their nest out for them to sleep in. Fun is slightly trickier to keep on top of as they need company – other little dragons, pets, and even gnomes – to play with. Or, you can give them dragon toys from Vicki.
Your Sim can interact directly with dragons, too. You can click on them to tickle, groom, or pet them. Aww. Don’t use Set Free, though, as your dragon will permanently leave home.
Can Dragons Die?
No! Thankfully not. But, if they feel neglected they will fly off to live with another family instead, so make sure to keep on top of their needs at all times.
Even though dragons don’t have to worry about death, your Sims aren’t so lucky. A neglected dragon might try out some other extreme measures to have their needs heard before they pack their little bags and leave.
A neglected dragon will set fire to Sims and their belongings. This can be fatal in many cases, particularly as fires in The Sims 1 are massively hard to manage. They can be quick to burn the house down and indirectly kill your Sims. Or, dragons might just light your Sim directly on fire either.
Cover your house with fire alarms. Seriously.
Benefits Of Having A Pet Dragon
The main benefit of owning a dragon is exactly that: having a pet dragon. But, the demanding creatures can earn their keep nicely by being sources of Dragon Scales and Dragon Tears; key items in Magic Town.
You can also buy Dragon Scales and Dragon Tears from Vicki.
How To Get Dragon Scales
Dragons sometimes drop scales when groomed by Sims. These scales can be sold for 21 MagiCoins, which can then be spent on more dragon treats and toys, or they can used for a few spells and charms:
- Get Happy Jr.
- Clone Drone Jr.
- Age of Instant
All of the above can only be used by Child Sims, so you should get your kids to collect dragon scales. Or, if your Sims are child-free, you’re best off just selling them for MagiCoins, and thus more gifts for your dragon.
Age of Instant is arguably one of the best charms in the game as it’s the only way of getting a Child Sim to grow up into an Adult Sim.
How To Get Dragon Tears
If you tickle your dragon, sometimes they will drop Dragon Tears. You can sell them for 24 MagiCoins in Magic Town, or use them in the following spells and charms:
- Enchant Jr.
- Smiley Face Jr.
- Lovestruck
- Clone Drone Jr.
- No More Puddles
You’ll still need other ingredients for these spells and charms.
