- Gunko’s tragic backstory and the potential influence from the Straw Hat Pirates hint at her betrayal.
Ever since the appearance of the Gods Knights on Elbaf, things have been going from bad to worse for the heroes of the story. Not only have these mysterious characters caused havoc almost immediately after getting to the island, but they possess some of the most powerful Devil Fruits in all of One Piece. When used together, their Devil Fruits powers are almost unstoppable.
However, despite the completely amoral and evil nature that the Gods Knights seem to portray, many fans believe that there is going to be a traitor within their ranks. At the time of writing, Gunko being the one to betray the Gods Knights seems pretty unlikely due to her ruthless attitude, but a certain One Piece theory brings her entire character arc to light, making her the perfect candidate for Elbaf’s biggest betrayal, so let’s see why this is.

To those unfamiliar with this theory, the claim that Gunko will be the one to betray her allies will sound insane, considering how she was the one who showed animosity towards Loki and beat him senseless while he was bound in chains. However, the subsequent chapters have shown her to be someone who has more depth to her character than could be seen at first glance, and her true origins make her the perfect candidate to do this.
To begin, the greatest part of this theory states that Gunko is actually a clone of one of the former officers of the Revolutionary Army; Ginny. Various clues hint towards this being the case, and seeing how Elbaf places a lot of emphasis on cloning, as was seen with Kuma and Vegapunk at the beginning of the arc, many feel as if this is establishing a thematic connection with the truth of Gunko’s origins and future relevance in the story.
Firstly, of all the Gods Knights who have been introduced so far, Gunko was the only one who didn’t have the title of ‘Saint’ before her name, which is what got the ball rolling on this theory in the first place. Fans believe that this could be the case for one of two reasons; either Gunko likely got her position in the Gods Knights similar to how it was offered to Loki while she was a commoner, or she was a clone made of Ginny after she was abducted, and so, lived her entire life in Marijoa.
However, since she wasn’t born from the lineage of any of the 20 ancient kingdoms, she never inherited the title of Saint, which makes sense considering how the Celestial Dragons are incredibly racist and xenophobic of anyone not from their stock. So, Gunko’s entire life was spent with the Celestial Dragons but never as one of them, which is reflected in her attitude towards Loki, where she recognized the importance of being in similar standing to them. Her unreasonable anger shows that she may have a chip on her shoulder because of this entire situation.
Receiving a chance to join the ranks of Gods is a miracle one can only dream of. And we are offering that miracle now.
As for why she may be a clone of Ginny, it was revealed that Ginny was once kidnapped by the Celestial Dragons and was subject to horrific treatment and experiments. This could very likely have included cloning, since Gunko and Ginny both share notable design cues, such as the hat with the goggles on it, which is the standard among the commanders of the Revolutionary Army, as well as their hair. Though a stretch, some even believe their face shapes to be similar, which could be why Gunko covers herself with bandages to hide Ginny’s iconic freckles.
Moreover, the theory hints at something even more sinister. It claims that Shamrock was the one to have captured and experimented on Ginny, which led to her death and the birth of Bonney. After seeing Ginny being infected with the incurable Sapphire Scale disease, Shamrock threw her away but made a clone of her before doing so, specifically to have a powerful tool designed specifically to be a Gods Knight. Shamrock being Bonney’s father makes sense too when considering the fact that when Oda drew the Supernovas as the opposite genders for an SBS, Bonney’s male counterpart looked identical to Shanks/Shamrock.
This all makes sense when asking why Gunko of all people has joined this illustrious militia when even someone as powerful as a Navy Admiral hasn’t, despite them likely being even stronger than her. The truth of this reveals that Gunko has a special background and was ‘created’ solely for the purpose of becoming a tool for the Celestial Dragons.
Knowing their nature as the most corrupt and vile people on the entire planet, another reason why Shamrock discarded Ginny may have had to do with the fact that Celestial Dragons hate losing things they consider their property, so Shamrock may have easily just have made a clone of Ginny to make up for that. Everything regarding both of the characters seems to check out here, paving the way for Gunko to betray the Gods Knights.

Why Would Gunko Betray The Gods Knights?
A Reason Behind This Possible Arc
Since her very first appearance, Gunko has been portrayed as one of the coldest and most heartless characters in the entire One Piece story, viewing everyone beneath the ranks of Celestial Dragons as trash. However, many believe that it is precisely because of this fact that she will betray the Gods Knights, since she may have spent her entire life as a subservient clone who has been viewed as nothing more than a tool of war.
By interacting with the Straw Hats and, most importantly, Bonney and Kuma, she will learn the true value of life and how the Celestial Dragons whom she has served are the real villains here. Plus, the story arc of Kuma and Bonney is still a prevalent one which fans believe will get a proper conclusion in Elbaf, so to have the clone of Ginny atone for her past and make this family whole again would be incredible to see.
