Summary

  • Critics be damned, as A Minecraft Movie is shaping up to be a massive success for Warner Bros.
  • With its $58 million opening on Friday, the Minecraft adaptation now has the biggest opening ever for a video game movie.
  • Updated tracking shows the movie on pace to cross $135 million, with the potential to eclipse $155 million.

It seems like negative critic reviews (48% on Rotten Tomatoes) or negative fan feedback (1,000,000 dislikes on the original trailer) have done little to stop A Minecraft Movie from being a massive success.

How massive?

How does the biggest Opening Day ever for a video game movie sound? Because with a reported $58 million, A Minecraft Movie earned the title for the biggest opening ever, besting even The Super Mario Bros. Movie (thanks Insider Gaming). What’s more, the Jack Black-led film also has the title of biggest opening so far in 2025. Sorry, Captain America.

Minecraft Is Tracking Towards Record-Breaking Numbers

In a new report published by Deadline, as it stands, A Minecraft Movie is trending towards an opening weekend of over $135 million. That would make it the best opener for a movie this year.

Depending on how things shape up Saturday evening, the movie could even push towards $145 million at the low end and up to $155 million. As the publication notes, should it cross $146.3 million, then it’ll pass the Mario Bros. movie for the biggest video game movie opening weekend ever.

Previously, as TheGamer reported, the movie was being forecasted for a $110 million opening. However, Deadline notes that strong walk-up (people buying tickets the day of) has the movie pushing past any past estimations.

It’s A Worldwide Sensation

Beyond the appeal of it being a family-friendly movie that is accessible to all age groups and starring actors with name-brand recognition, it appears that the movie is also quite trendy with its memes.

On social media, there’s no shortage of people going crazy for its many references and quotable moments. That seems to be playing a role, with others wanting to be part of the audience experience.

All that is to say is that it looks like Warner Bros. has a major hit on its hands. Who would’ve guessed that A Minecraft Movie could wind up being the single most successful video game adaptation? Not us, that’s for sure. But it goes to show what critics and audiences want or think can often be day and night.
