In addition to their iconic hidden blades, the protagonists in the Assassin’s Creed series also use various other gadgets, either as deadly weapons or as extra tools in combat. While known for their love of daggers, this doesn’t mean an assassin can’t carry other equipment that provides a great advantage over adversaries.

Assassin’s Creed: The 9 Best Assassins In The Games
There have been a good number of assassins introduced in the Assassin’s Creed series, but these ones are the best.
Some of these tools and gadgets are lethal, like firearms, while others are non-lethal, such as smoke bombs. All of these can be extremely helpful, whether it is to distract enemies, escape dangerous situations, or confront the enemy head-on.

Hookblade
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed Revelations
The hookblade is a modification of the iconic hidden blade used by the assassins. First introduced by the assassins in Constantinople, it can be used for both traversal and combat. While parkouring, you can use it to climb faster, reach higher places, as a zipline, and to interact with destructible elements in the environment.
In combat, the hookblade serves as a deadly weapon, allowing you to bring enemies closer, flip them around, or to quickly escape. Since it was introduced, the hookblade has remained exclusive to Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Hopefully, a similar modification will be featured in future AC titles.

Smoke Bombs
- Available in: Most Assassin’s Creed games except for 1 and Odyssey.
A recurring tool in most Assassin’s Creed games, the smoke bomb helps you get out of trouble quickly. Similar to the smoke bombs used by ninjas in other media, in Assassin’s Creed, these help you regain stealth status after you’re detected by the enemy.
Smoke bombs can also be used to distract enemies or to hide your movements. You can throw the bomb near a group of enemies, take them down, and escape before anyone sees what your assassin did. It can also be used to slow down enemies when they are pursuing you.

Cherry Bombs/Noisemakers
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Unity and Mirage
As an assassin, distractions are essential when you need to take down a target silently and without any witnesses. Cherry bombs and noisemakers are the perfect tools to achieve this and to complete quests without being detected.

Best Games Like Assassin’s Creed
If you’ve played through every Assassin’s Creed game and are looking for something new, then any of these games would be perfect.
While called by different names in Assassin’s Creed games, they serve the same purpose: distraction. However, in some AC games, they can be upgraded to deal damage to enemies. Cherry bombs can also be used to lure enemies to a specific location, where a rival faction and combat await them.
5
Firearms
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed Ezio’s Trilogy, 3, 4, Rogue, Unity, Syndicate
Since some Assassin’s Creed games take place in time periods before the invention of gunpowder, firearms aren’t available in all of them. However, when firearms are included, they add new gameplay features and offer fresh ways to play as an assassin. Both pistols and rifles have appeared across the AC titles.
Firearms are excellent for taking out enemies at long range, but they’re also effective in close combat with pistols. However, firearms are noisy, and as an assassin, they should be used as a last resort or only when already engaged in combat.
4
Flying Machine
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood
Created by Leonardo da Vinci, the flying machine is given to Ezio to use in a specific quest. Flying over Venice, you can take down enemies from the machine but must navigate around fire to stay in the air.
In Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, the flying machine receives a major upgrade and becomes a bomber. However, the Borgias have a couple of these prototypes, so Ezio must take to the skies again. With the bomber, you destroy the remaining machines. The only drawback of this gadget is that it’s only usable in a specific section of the game. Hopefully, we’ll see a new version of the flying machine in future AC titles, one that can be used more freely.
3
Grappling Hook
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Shadows
Also known in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate as a rope launcher, the grappling hook is back in AC Shadows. While Syndicate’s version is more advanced, functioning as a zipline as well, both versions are incredibly helpful for better traversal and parkour.

The grappling hook is also a great tool for reaching areas that would be impossible to access without it. Other versions of the grappling hook have appeared in specific quests within the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games. However, with AC Shadows, it’s clear that this gadget should be a default tool for assassins in future games.
2
Throwing Knives
- Available in: Most Assassin’s Creed games except Unity and Origins
A tool available to most of the assassins in the series, throwing knives are perfect as both a ranged and silent weapon. A great substitute for firearms, knives allow you to remain hidden from your enemies after using them. They’re an ideal tool for taking down enemies on rooftops or watchtowers.
What makes throwing knives more effective than other tools is how easy they are to find. In most Assassin’s Creed games, you’ll find throwing knives scattered around, especially in combat areas.
1
Parachute
- Available in: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Revelations
An invention by Leonardo da Vinci, he gives the parachute to his friend, assassin Ezio Auditore. The parachute allowed Ezio to jump from incredible heights without issue. There’s a lot to climb in Assassin’s Creed games, such as synchronization points, which are often in very high places.
While you can jump directly into a haystack from high places, the parachute gives you the freedom to glide to wherever you want from that point. Parachutes are only available in Ezio’s games, but they’re a gadget that should be brought back, as climbing high places is still an essential element in the series.
