Former PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida has commented on the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, and says that it was “underwhelming.” Yoshida was among the over a million viewers who tuned in live for the full Nintendo Switch 2 reveal.

The Nintendo Switch 2 got its first full showcase on April 2, which detailed the console, the (formerly) mysterious Nintendo Switch 2 C button, and some of the games coming to the new system. Many of the leaks turned out to be true, and as one might expect of Nintendo, there were a number of unique and interesting innovations going into the console that no other system can claim to have. However, some weren’t all too impressed with the detailed showcase.

Nintendo Switch 2’s GameCube games catalog gets a special feature that brings an old-school gaming feel to the modern console.

Among them is Shuhei Yoshida, who watched the stream live with YouTube channel MinnMax, and then shared his commentary on it. Yoshida said that the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was “underwhelming until the FromSoftware game showed up,” referring to The Duskbloods. Yoshida was disappointed that there weren’t more new game announcements, showing disappointment as to how many of the games promoted for the system were just remakes or ports. He also expressed some surprise at the high price point of the Nintendo Switch 2, noting that $450 was high, but that “everything’s price is higher now.” However, even that came with a caveat, as he was surprised to hear that the Switch 2 would cost 50,000 yen in Japan, or the equivalent of about $345 at the time of writing. Yoshida even went so far as to say that people should buy the console from Japan directly, though the reveal of region locking on the Japan-version Nintendo Switch 2 could be a problem.

Yoshida’s Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Weren’t All Negative

There were some elements of the reveal that Yoshida did like, however. Yoshida had praise for the interesting new social features on the Switch 2, specifically regarding the camera and the ability to tune into other players’ gameplay and video streams while gaming. All in all, he gave the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct a 7 out of 10, though he would have graded it a 6 if not for the FromSoftware reveal.

The Nintendo Switch 2’s release does seem to be launching without a tremendous number of brand-new Nintendo exclusives, though this is likely due in part to the company still supporting the original Switch. Chances are the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct would have been far more exciting if Nintendo hadn’t suffered so many leaks in advance of its reveal, as well. Practically everything about the console, including its specs, C button, and Joy-Con mouse functionality was leaked in advance. For now, it remains to be seen if the Nintendo Switch 2 can find its footing as the follow-up to one of the most successful game consoles of all time.
