As fans would likely expect, Netflix’s new anime Devil May Cry focuses on the main protagonist from the games, Dante. However, he has to make do with sharing the spotlight with his female counterpart, Lady, who gets pretty much equal amounts of screen time and focus. The narrative is cleverly balanced between the two leads, slowly peeling back the curtain on their backstories as Devil May Cry progresses and their fates become intertwined.
Game Rant recently spoke with Scout Taylor-Compton, who plays Lady in the show, and she discussed how playing Lady felt natural for her. Taylor-Compton had already established a strong working relationship with the show’s creator, Adi Shankar, having worked with him previously. This bond helped the actress trust the material and decisions made throughout Devil May Cry‘s production.

Fans can expect to see these popular Devil May Cry characters appear in the upcoming Netflix show.
Lady and Dante Go Way Back in Devil May Cry
Gamers were first introduced to Lady, whose real name is Mary, in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening back in 2005. A fierce demon hunter, Lady has proved she is capable of keeping up with Dante time and again in her video game appearances. The show introduces a younger Lady, though, and through her interactions with Dante, a bond slowly develops as they begin to understand they aren’t as different from each other as they first appeared. Taylor-Compton spoke of the difficulty in building an off-screen dynamic with Jonny Yong Bosch, who plays Dante, as they did not record lines together. However, her trust in the material ultimately meant that this was not an issue. She explained,
”We record by ourselves, so we don’t record with the other actors. It’s literally me just reading my lines. So I have no idea what the other actors were doing, but I think, more importantly, I understood the material. And, I just understand Adi, so I could read what was going on. And thankfully, Johnny did such an amazing job. We just connected without actually connecting in the room.”
Taylor-Compton Trusted Devil May Cry’s Material
Taylor-Compton has been in several other high-profile roles, perhaps none more so than that of the legendary horror character Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and its sequel. However, unlike when playing Strode, Taylor-Compton did not feel the need to copy the on-screen depiction of Lady by playing through previous games and studying her traits. Instead, her familiarity with the show’s creator, Adi Shankar, meant she could play Lady as naturally as possible. She continued,
”I did Halloween and Laurie Strode is such a loved character, so cherished. I went and watched those movies like crazy, and I was like, I have to be like her. That’s something I didn’t do here. I didn’t go and re-watch, or go play the games and listen to her voice. Adi and I have known each other for so long, and I know that this is his love story, this is his dream. So I know that whoever he was going to pick for Lady was the right fit for it.”
Devil May Cry proves that Lady is Dante’s equal, and the show isn’t afraid to show this on numerous occasions. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops further in future seasons if the show continues.
