Summary
- The Nintendo Switch 2’s camera will have a more appealing Piranha Plant version at launch.
- The console’s camera was a big feature shown off during this week’s Direct.
- The Piranha Plant alternative is officially licensed but created by HORI.
A chunk of Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct was dedicated to demonstrating how its new Game Chat feature will work. Part of its appeal will be the ability to effectively superimpose yourself into Switch 2 games using the console’s camera accessory. If you weren’t sold on it during the Direct, you might be swayed by the alternative version of the accessory that has been revealed since.
Although the Switch 2 camera is black and likely designed to match the rather plain aesthetic of its console, it wasn’t much to look at. The Piranha Plant version of the camera that has been revealed since, however, will almost certainly be more popular. Even if you don’t have any interest in using the Switch 2’s camera features, the Piranha Plant camera will likely appeal to those who just like the idea of having it on display.

The Piranha Plant camera hasn’t technically been revealed by Nintendo. It was spotted by VGC in a listing on German site Media Mrkt, but it is indeed an officially licensed Nintendo product. The camera has been created by HORI, a notable video game accessory creator that has worked with Nintendo to create official controllers and peripherals for a long time.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Camera Will Have An Alternative Piranha Plant Version
I’d Much Rather Have One Of These Sitting Alongside My Console
The listing is still up at Media Mrkt and the camera costs 40 euros, so roughly $45. My guess is when the camera is listed for sale in the US, it will retail for $49.99. While that’s a slight markup on the European price when directly converted, the plain black camera’s price was revealed to be $50. It’s already almost certain more people will choose the Piranha Plant camera over the standard one. If it were also cheaper then the plain black camera might not sell at all.
The packaging for the Piranha Plant camera also reveals that you can close its mouth when the camera is not in use.
Aside from the array of game reveals, Nintendo really leaned into making it clear it wants people using the Switch 2 with others, and the accompanying camera will be a big part of that. That section of the Direct also revealed the mysterious C button we’ve all been worried about is used to initiate the console’s chat feature. The console also has a built-in mic that can pick up your voice, and cancel out other background noise, even if it’s on the other side of the room.
The Switch 2 reveal has been a mixed bag for most. While the games look great, particularly the first-party ones and the upgrades announced for original Switch games, the prices have rubbed some the wrong way. Particularly the reveal that Mario Kart World will be an $80 game.
