Summary

  • Pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch 2 will require you to meet certain criteria.
  • Among these are having enough play time on the original Switch.
  • These criteria are in place to deter scalpers.

Last night’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct revealed a whole lot more about the console, the exclusive games that will be coming with it, the third party games that you’ll have access to, and, of course, the release date. As is the case after any major game or console reveal, the pre-orders are already at capacity. You’ll have to wait for another round if you haven’t already booked a slot.

Ah Switch, here we go again.

However, it seems that the eligibility for pre-ordering the Switch 2 isn’t simply based on who clicks first. According to the Nintendo UK store, there are several criteria that you need to fulfil to be selected for the pre-order. While this may sound a bit confusing, it’s actually a way for Nintendo to deter scalpers from buying in bulk and selling the Switch 2 for profit.

Scalpers Will Need To Switch 2 Another Tactic

As spotted by VG247, it seems there are a few criteria that you need to meet in order to be eligible for a Switch 2 pre-order slot. Of course, you’ll still need to place your pre-order in a timely manner, but your application will only count if you meet these requirements.

Firstly, you’re required to be a “Nintendo Switch Online member for at least two years continuously by 31/03/2025, with an active membership on the day that the pre-order is placed.” So, if you happened to deactivate your account in that time, you’re out of luck. Next, you’ll need to have opted in to receive promotional Nintendo emails, which isn’t really much of a problem.

The next criteria, however, is in place to ensure that only actual fans and genuine customers get access to the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order. You’ll be eligible only if you have “spent a certain amount of time playing purchased/paid Nintendo Switch games, prioritising those with more playtime.” This ensures that bots and scalpers are deterred from stocking up on the console and selling it at a profit.

Scalping is a major issue with the launch of any major hardware, and this criteria may make it just a little bit harder for scalpers to horde to console.
