Summary

  • Mario Kart World will not be the only $80 game on the Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Some of the upgraded versions of original Switch games will also have the new price tag.
  • Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Party Jamboree, and The Forgotten Land’s Switch 2 versions will cost $80.

Nintendo caused quite a stir on Wednesday for various reasons via its Switch 2 Direct. However, one of the biggest talking points coming out of it was something that wasn’t shared during the Direct. Mario Kart World will cost $80. Brace yourselves if that reveal came as quite the shock yesterday because it turns out that won’t be the only $80 Switch 2 game.

More details about the Switch 2 and its games that weren’t shared during the Direct have been finding their way out into the world in the hours since it ended. That now includes confirmation of prices for some of the Switch 2’s Switch upgrades. Some of the original Switch’s best games will be getting fully-fledged Switch 2 upgrades, some of which will even have extra content.

Tears of the Kingdom is getting five more amiibo, and Street Fighter 6 is getting three.

While confirmation that Mario Kart World will be an $80 game came from Nintendo (the $79.99 MSRP is right there on the game’s new page), there is no mention of how much Switch 2 editions of games that have already or will launch on the original Switch will cost. However, multiple US retailers have confirmed that most of the Switch 2 editions will cost $80, just like World (thanks, VGC).

The $80 price tag will apply to the Switch 2 editions of The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Kirby and The Forgotten Land. The Switch 2 edition of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will be $70. Upcoming releases Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A will also have Switch 2 editions, but since they’re listings aren’t live, it’s unclear whether their upgraded versions will cost $70 or $80.

There is a silver lining for those of you with the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Nintendo has revealed the Switch 2 upgrades for Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom will be included with your subscription. Why those two upgrades and not any of the others, that’s unclear, but hey, at least it’s something.

What each upgrade does also differs from game to game. While the Zelda Switch 2 upgrades will mainly be visual ones, Mario Party and The Forgotten Land will be getting new content, hence Nintendo thinking it’s okay to make their Switch 2 versions $80 games. $80 will not be the standard for all first-party Switch 2 games, though. Donkey Kong Bananza closed Wednesday’s Direct, and DK’s new 3D platformer will be a $70 game.
