As a 3D action platformer that’s got a heavy focus on story and atmosphere, you might be wondering just how long South of Midnight is going to take to beat, especially in a relatively quiet month. Read on to find out what to expect.
How Many Chapters Does It Have?
South of Midnight is split into 14 chapters, but they’re not exactly even when it comes to how long you can expect them to last. Some chapters are incredibly short and mostly focus on exploration, while others are more sprawling with a lot more combat and boss fights between them.
Beyond that, though, South of Midnight is a linear adventure without any branching choices or anything major in terms of side content, so those 14 chapters are pretty much all you need to focus on.
How Long Does It Take To Beat?
The long chapters in South of Midnight take anywhere between one and two hours each, while shorter chapters are usually around half an hour. If you’re just aiming to beat the game without going off the beaten path at all, you’re looking at around 10 to 12 hours to complete South of Midnight on its Normal difficulty. It took me 14 with a decent amount of collectible hunting and stopping to smell the roses.
There are other difficulty options to make things harder or easier, but they really just affect combat. Still, you can expect your playtime to be more or less depending on what option you select.
How Long Does It Take To 100 Percent Complete?
Beating South of Midnight is one thing, but 100 percent completing it is another altogether thanks to all of the collectibles it has. The big ones are Floofs, little pickups found throughout levels, and there is a set amount to find in each chapter. There are a total of 2,200 Floofs to find in South of Midnight, and some are pretty tough to find, so expect a lot of your playtime to be spent on them.
That’s not all, though, as there are also nine Health Filaments to collect that are smartly tucked away in most of the chapters. There are also 103 Readables to be discovered and, while these are a little easier to spot, getting them all is going to take some time.
South of Midnight thankfully lets you replay chapters to mop up collectibles, so you don’t need to worry about starting again.
All in all, it seems like it’s going to take around 16 to 20 hours to 100 percent complete South of Midnight and find every collectible littered around the world. I can’t imagine most will be able to do it in one playthrough either, so expect to be replaying chapters to mop everything up.
