Disney’s live-action remakes have become the norm for the company, best known for its animations. They have been taking classics and reimagining them in a new format with a live-action twist, and it has been confirmed that 2010’s Tangled is now one of the movies being worked on next.
Disney will be releasing a live-action Lilo & Stitch later this year, but beyond that, there are plans for Tangled to be given the same treatment as Rapunzel, which will be brought to life in a unique manner. However, right now, it’s unknown who will be taking on the role of the Disney princess, which will be a significant decision, and they could be set to take a big risk.

Disney Has Struggled With Live Action Movies
Snow White Is The Latest Flop
Since the moment Disney started creating the live-action remakes, there has been a debate among fans about whether or not they’re needed or something that people want to see. Disney has created a wide variety now, and while some, such as The Lion King, have proven to be huge hits, many others have flopped. Snow White is the latest live-action movie that has flopped, with this movie having been surrounded by controversy almost from the start. Rachel Zegler has been outspoken about not liking the original, and people in the industry complain about the decisions made regarding the dwarves. All of the noise seemingly hurt the interest because it took in $44.3 million domestically for its opening weekend and just $87.3 million globally, which was a long way from the $100 million that was initially projected.
It proves that even though Disney has many notable intellectual properties, it doesn’t guarantee they will be a hit within this format.
Another big issue that Disney has had with the live-action movies is purely down to their quality. While seeing these beloved films brought to life in a new manner is interesting, it has opened up for some extra details to be added to them, which hasn’t always led to them being entertaining. There have been many live-action remakes that simply haven’t been good enough for the high standard people set for Disney projects, and that is leading to the general interest in future movies dropping with each poor release. Snow White has fallen into that category, and it is now putting extra pressure on future live-action movies in a bid to change the trajectory for these.
Tangled Has Real Potential To Be A Hit For Disney
The Original Movie Was Beloved By Fans
Certain Disney movies never seemed to lend themselves naturally to being adapted, such as Lady & The Tramp or Pinocchio, but Tangled is the opposite. The majority of the characters being human makes this something that is slightly easier to adapt, while the world that Rapunzel is set in isn’t over-the-top or ridiculous. It’s bright and exciting but without being impossible to recreate compellingly, and that is why Tangled has a lot of potential to work as a live-action film. There are many fantastic musical numbers that will add a lot of kinetic energy, a compelling villain with a detailed backstory, and plenty of twists and turns that will help make the film an exciting one if Disney can pull it off.
Disney Needs To Take A Gamble On Who Plays Rapunzel
Sabrina Carpenter Is An Ideal Option For This Role
While Tangled will have an ensemble cast due to how many important roles there are in the movie, the pressure will ultimately be on whoever plays Rapunzel. The princess is the lead character and carries the movie; therefore, Disney must get the casting spot. The drama surrounding Zegler as Snow White has only increased that, and two major names have been rumored so far. One of which is Florence Pugh, who is a proven actress at this point and one of the most exciting names in Hollywood. Anytime her name is attached to a role, there’s a level of buzz surrounding what she will be capable of delivering due to her consistent output level. This would be a drastically different role from what she’s done before, but that’s a challenge that Pugh would no doubt rise to.
Even though Pugh would be an excellent choice for Rapunzel, it could be argued that it’s slightly safe. After so many flops in this world, now might be the time for Disney to take a big swing and make a riskier casting choice in the form of Sabrina Carpenter. The popular singer is one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now and has been growing her reputation worldwide with her catchy songs and charismatic performances. She knows how to get people interested in a project, and there’s no doubt that putting her in this role would have millions of people talking about the movie. That’s the type of bold casting that Disney needs to make to create attention for Tangled and connect the film with a younger generation. She has acting experience, which means it wouldn’t be as risky as it may first seem. Either way, taking the gamble on her might be what Tangled needs to thrive at the box office and get people talking about live-action films.
