Breath Of The Wild And Tears Of The Kingdom Will Have Achievements On Switch 2

Summary

  • Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will include achievements on Switch 2.
  • The Zelda Notes that come with the upgraded versions of the games include achievements lists for both games.
  • There’s been no indication at this stage that other Switch 2 games will include achievements.

Nintendo threw a lot at us about the Switch 2 and its games during a 60-minute Direct on Wednesday. So much that a few finer details may have slipped through the cracks, including the reveal that The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom‘s Switch 2 editions will have achievements.

Breath of the Wild and its sequel will be getting Switch 2 upgrades that will not only improve the games’ visuals, but will also grant players access to something called Zelda notes via Nintendo’s new app. Zelda Notes will effectively be a companion app as you traverse Hyrule and even includes a map with Hylian GPS, meaning no opening and closing the in-game map all the time. You can just have it open on your phone with it showing you which way you need to go to locate a shrine or find your next side quest.

As spotted by VGC, it also seems the Zelda Notes will give you access to a list of achievements, presumably one list for each game. Part of one of the lists was briefly shown during the Direct as the narrator broke down the Global Play Data you’ll have access to. That will not only include how many hours you’ve been playing (a welcome upgrade on the Switch just estimating your play time), and even how many enemies you’ve killed so far, among other things.

However, it then briefly switches to a list of achievements. The list shown is from Tears of the Kingdom as one of the achievements requires you to unlock a certain amount of Lightroots in The Depths. The achievements list will also track how many shrines you’ve completed, how many locations you’ve visited, and there are more that weren’t shown during the Direct.

Nintendo has shied away from hopping on the achievements bandwagon, even with PlayStation and Xbox having their respective versions in place for three console generations at this point. Having a trophy system of some description was likely high on quite a few people’s Switch 2 wish lists. This is far from full achievement/trophy integration, and it looks like the achievements in the upgraded Zelda games will be stuff you’d be doing anyway, but it’s a start.

There’s good news and bad news for those of you eager to play the Switch 2 versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The good news is they’ll be included with the NSO Expansion Pass. The bad news is that the standalone Switch 2 versions of the game will cost $70 for Breath of the Wild, and $80 for Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo has not yet revealed how much the upgrades will cost for people who own the original versions of the games but aren’t subscribed to the Expansion Pack.
