That doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence, and neither does the initial trailer and its over 1,000,000 dislikes at release. However, it appears that the negativity won’t hamper the film’s box office potential, with one insider estimating upwards of $110 million on its opening weekend alone.
The Minecraft Movie Is Shaping Up To Be A Success
In a new report at Box Office Theory, a movie industry analysis website, Shawn Robbins is projecting big things for the Minecraft picture. Specifically, while “Traditional Industry Tracking & Expectations” is estimating a $65 million opening, Robbins is forecasting a range between $90 and $110 million.
Another forecaster has it pushing past $100 million on Opening Weekend, outpacing Inside Out 2. In a forum post, they wrote, “Well, reviews didn’t hurt at all. Pace continues to be great. … The question is, how high can it go?”
Why It’s Looking Like A Success
While critics seem to be really down on the movie, it seems like little will be able to stop its success. Robbins notes in his post that there “is clear and present pent-up demand for a major family-driven tentpole accessible by all ages and demographics,” which Minecraft seems to satisfy.
There’s also the element of “ironic viewing” to account for, according to Robbins. He notes a similar situation happening with the last Despicable Me movie and the meme of people watching it in suits. Together, it’s painting a picture of a movie that will seemingly be a success despite what others may think of it.
