A new budget-friendly AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE graphics card is reportedly on the way, according to a new leak. However, it’s unclear if the card is likely to see a launch in the West, as the GRE branding has typically (although not exclusively) been used for cards released in China.

Originally standing for Golden Rabbit Edition, in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit in 2023, AMD recently updated the branding to stand for Great Radeon Edition. While China has been the primary market for GRE GPUs, some cards, such as the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE, have seen a wider global release, with that card in particular getting a spot in our best graphics card shortlist until recently.

News of this potential new AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE came via a post on ITHome, which suggested that the company is planning to launch such a card “with a better price-performance ratio” compared to the 9070 XT. While it might share a name with the RX 9070, there will reportedly be some key differences in specs.

The report suggests that the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE will see a 4GB reduction in VRAM compared to the 9070, dropping down to 12GB, as well as using a 192-bit memory bus compared to the 9070’s 256-bit configuration. It may also be less powerful, with fewer stream processors than the 3,584 included in the 9070 non-XT.

Given the comments about price and performance, it’s likely that AMD will offer this card for less than the existing 9070’s $549 MSRP. However, whether gamers will want this card will depend on how well it performs, especially compared to the competition provided by Nvidia cards such as the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti.

If AMD is preparing more budget GPUs, that’s good for gamers, but the GRE branding would strongly suggest that this is a card that only Chinese gamers will get to enjoy. Until then, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT remains the best GPU for most gamers to buy, and you can check out our RX 9070 XT review to see why.
