What Would The Straw Hats Professions Be In The Real World?

What Would The Straw Hats Professions Be In The Real World?

Summary

  • Luffy would be a firefighter while Zoro would be a police officer in the real world.
  • Sanji would work in a beauty salon and Nami would be a childcare worker.
  • Chopper would teach at an elementary school, Usopp would be a graphic designer, and Franky would be a pilot.

While One Piece does take place in a fantasy world, vastly different from reality, many fans often wonder what the Straw Hat Crew would be like if they were in the real world. While questions like these are merely fun little instances of speculation, Oda is more than happy to weigh in giving definitive answers as to who the Straw Hats would be if they lived on Earth. Although these answers are far from the canon of the series, they help answer the burning questions of many curious readers.

One such question that was asked of Oda involves what professions the Straw Hat Crew would have if they were in the real world. With pirating not being a valid option, the author of One Piece, Oda shares a new vision of the Straw Hat Pirates, complete with a few unexpected choices. Still, since this isn’t exactly canon, the jobs of the Straw Hat Crew outside of their current roles are completely up to interpretation, at least until Oda decides to make it canon.

The Jobs Of The Straw Hats In The Real World

These Careers Are Different From Their Current Occupations

For these positions, it seems that Oda followed a few specific rules. Mainly, when it comes to these jobs, Oda has intentionally decided to choose careers that are drastically different from their current occupations in the story of One Piece, yet still in line with their personalities. For example, for these real-world occupations, Sanji can’t just be a chef again and instead needs to be something different.

Zoro Similarly Would Become A Police Officer

Luffy’s Professions (Before And After)

Captain

Firefighter

Zoro’s Professions

Swordsman

Police Officer

Firstly, Oda states that the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy, would be a firefighter. For Luffy, this career choice makes sense, as he is frequently charging headfirst into dangerous situations to help others. Though related to this, Oda states that Zoro, on the other hand, would be a police officer, especially with his strong sense of justice. In this reality, it seems like Luffy and Zoro would be fairly close still, especially with the close proximity of their careers.

Sanji Would Become A Beauty Salon Worker

Nami Could Take Care Of Children As A Childcare Worker

Sanji’s Professions

Chef

Nami’s Professions

Navigator

Childcare Worker

Next, Sanji, very fittingly, would work in a beauty salon. While this sounds like a far cry from cooking, something more fitting for the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates, it definitely fits Sanji’s obsessive personality. As for Nami, given her relationship she has had with children throughout the series, Oda believes that she would be a childcare worker. However, some fans were disappointed by this choice, believing she should still work with maps in some capacity.

Chopper Would Teach At An Elementary School

Usopp Could Find Himself A Career In Graphic Design

Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece

Chopper’s Professions

Doctor

Teacher

Usopp’s Professions

Sniper

Graphic Designer

Similar to Nami, Oda believes Chopper would be an elementary school teacher, using his intelligence to mold future generations, and is inline with his soft exterior, yet potentially angry interior. As for Usopp, Oda stated that the Straw Hat sniper would instead become a graphic designer. Though this seems a bit out of left field, Usopp has always been fairly tech-savvy, at least in the One Piece universe, and very creative. These two attributes would translate to graphic design well in the modern world.

Next up, another Straw Hat Crew member who would fit their new career well is Franky, who Oda stated would be a pilot. Dealing with technology all day is right up Franky’s field, and the Straw Hat shipwright is already a master of piloting complex machines. Related to this, Oda believes Robin would be a flight attendant, most likely due to her calming presence. However, this decision made a fair amount of fans upset, who believed Robin should have had a profession more in line with her personality, like a Professor.

Jinbe Could Become A Train Attendant

Jinbe’s Professions

Train Attendant

Finally, for Brook, the skeleton musician would be a detective if he had another job. While this is strange, Brook has always been a fairly inquisitive member of the Straw Hat Crew, and would likely be fairly good at this career. Finally, for Jinbe, the Helmsman would become a train station attendant if he was in the modern world.

I served with the Rumbar Pirates as the musician swordsman… – Brook

While, for many, some of these answers weren’t what fans wanted to hear, these are the jobs that the author of One Piece believes the Straw Hats would have if they weren’t pirates. Although some of the choices seem odd, at the very least, each one feels in line with their personalities. However, many fans have high hopes for the future of the Straw Hat Crew, so seeing them as anything but One Piece’s legendary pirates is slightly disappointing.
