The Star Trek franchise’s most exciting ongoing series is just months away from a highly anticipated third season, and the first teaser trailer for the upcoming installment strongly suggests that the show is doubling down on one of its better ideas.
Star Trek has taken well to the streaming era, with the TV-born franchise launching in theaters under Paramount’s management before finding a permanent home on the company’s streamer, Paramount Plus. One of the more successful ongoing projects is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery that fans and even critics have enjoyed immensely. The first two installments of the show currently sit north of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a third season is already on the way. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ upcoming third season needs to deliver big to avoid a mistake the franchise has seen before, as far back as The Next Generation.

One reason for the show’s popularity is that Strange New Worlds has taken some big swings with trying new things, most notably with the musical episode Subspace Rhapsody. Likely inspired by this, series star Celia Rose Gooding gave some other unique ideas for Strange New Worlds to explore new genres in a recent appearance, and it seems the show is well on its way to tackling more of those sorts of ideas. A new teaser trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was released on the official Paramount Plus YouTube channel, complete with a confirmation of a summer release window. In it, fans get a quick sampling of the show’s characters in what appears to be different genre-inspired episodes, ranging from a murder mystery to a perky homage to old Trek shows, all with some very meta-sounding commentary to go along with it.
Strange New Worlds has lived up to its name in a narrative and meta sense, taking fans to strange new places in-universe while employing unique and novel ideas in the way those stories are told to the audience. Gooding’s co-star Anson Mount wants to publish a Captain Pike cookbook based on his character’s on-screen culinary prowess (and his entirely self-reported IRl skills), and even that character trait is a great example of how Strange New Worlds has given the franchise a new feel. There’s a lot to go through in the newly released trailer, but the main message comes across loud and clear: this next ten-episode installment is going to keep giving fans fun and exciting new ways to enjoy their Trek.
It’s looking good for the showrunner’s promise that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will start shooting a fourth season this year, as the writer’s room for the fourth installment has been up and active for almost a year at this point. With the third season leaning so strongly into this experimental new vibe wholeheartedly, there’s a good chance that Gooding eventually does get her Star Trek mockumentary-style episode sometime soon (if that wasn’t teasing a season three episode to begin with). In the meantime, fans can look forward to an exciting new helping of episodes come summer.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available to stream on Paramount+, with season three set to premiere over the summer.
