One original Scream star who is returning in the next movie fears they will “screw up a legacy.”
David Arquette joined his Scream co-stars Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard, Dermot Mulroney and Skeet Ulrich at 90s Con. They were asked if their children had already watched the horror movie. Arquette, who was previously married to his Scream co-star Courteney Cox and shared one daughter with her, Coco, shared the latter’s reaction. “I tried to watch Scream with Coco during COVID,” Arquette said, People reported. “She’s like, ‘Dad, this is just weird.'” David agreed with his daughter, telling her “I know.” However, things reportedly changed when the 2022 Scream movie was released. Coco went to the premiere and her reaction was different this time. Arquette said:
She went to one of the screenings and she saw all the fan response and she just was sweet. She was like, ‘Aww, they love you guys.’
Arquette’s character, Dewey Riley, a police deputy, has an on-again, off-again relationship with Cox’s Gale Weather, a reporter-turned-author. The pair eventually married in Scream 3 (2000) and lived together in Scream 4 (2011). However, in Scream (2022), Gale and Dewey had already split — much like Arquette and Cox’s real-life romance. Although they didn’t have a happy ending as a couple, the two actors remained friends and were professional. Drew Barrymore also shared her children’s reaction after watching Scream. Barrymore appeared in the opening scene of the first movie as Casey Becker. The audience was shocked after seeing her brutal death in the first 10 minutes of the movie. However, Barrymore’s daughters Frankie and Olive were very impressed by her performance. The two reportedly watched the film when they had a sleepover with their girlfriends and they told her she was “so good” at it. Olive reportedly added that she will use the concept for her Halloween costume when she gets a boyfriend. She will play her mom’s character, Casey, and her boyfriend will be Steve.
Coco’s initial reaction when she first watched the movie, finding it “weird,” was understandable. Her parents are on the screen, and it’s awkward to watch them in a movie involving romance and horror, much more so when they are beside her. However, Coco’s reaction two years later after seeing how the fans adored her parents was sweet. For sure, Arquette and Cox were proud and honored because their daughter saw the success of the project they had been part of for decades. Much like Barrymore’s daughters’ reaction, it’s a proud moment for parents to hear their children approve of their work. Also, Scream is very popular, so it surely made them cool parents in their children’s eyes. Parents are exalted when their little ones love their work, pretty sure Arquette, Cox and Barrymore felt that way at one point in their lives, considering their children’s reactions to their roles in Scream.
Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
