Roguelike sequel Enter the Gungeon 2 surprise announced, and it has a huge twist

There are few games I love more than Enter the Gungeon. It’s easily the roguelike I return to the most, and while Hades 2, Dead Cells, and Slay the Spire have all carved out special places in my heart, it’s the bullet-themed bonanza that I just can’t shake. Color me surprised to learn that Enter the Gungeon 2 isn’t just real, then, but it’s also making a pretty big change to the pixel art stylings of the original game.

Enter the Gungeon 2 is shaking off the vibrant pixels of its past for an all-new 3D art style. The roguelike game sequel was briefly shown off during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, and it looks as chaotic as ever. If we take a look at Gungeon 2’s new Steam page, however, we learn a lot more about what we can expect from the sequel.

“Enter the Gungeon 2 is a reloaded, high-caliber sequel to the iconic bullet hell dungeon crawler, reinforced with a new 3D art style, new weapons and enemies, and expanded gameplay,” developer Dodge Roll writes.

“Battle through areas familiar and unknown as the ruined Gungeon reveals its secrets to those brave enough to enter. Discover, unlock, and master fantastic weaponry within its procedurally generated halls and destroy the legions of Gundead pouring forth from within. Charge into dynamic battles against devilishly cute enemies, previously confined to the 2D plane, and delight as they are knocked around, tossed into the air, and thrown deep into pits.

“Choose from an expanding roster of Gungeoneers full of both familiar and new faces as you rescue and extract marooned heroes from the depths of the Gungeon. Become mighty through unexpected combinations of powerful passive items, explosive active items, blessings, curses, and your own mastery over an impressive armory of weapons.”

On the surface, Enter the Gungeon 2 looks like it’s got all the core tenets of the original game. There’s a top-down viewpoint, a mess of bullets crowding the screen, tough bosses, and of course, the dodge roll. It even looks like the jacked up Gatling Gull is making a return, so I can’t wait to see who else has been reimagined in the new 3D art style.

Enter the Gungeon 2 is scheduled for 2026 on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam, and you can wishlist it on Valve’s storefront now. Just head here.
