The hour-long April 2 Nintendo Direct was filled to the brim with exciting announcements about titles coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Games joining the Switch 2’s lineup include both first-party Nintendo games like the newly announced Kirby Air Riders and Mario Kart World as well as a diverse array of titles from other publishers, ranging from Cyberpunk 2077 to Civilization 7. One particularly exciting Nintendo Switch 2 launch title is Split Fiction, a cooperative action-adventure game which released in early March 2025 to rave reviews.

Split Fiction Is Already Making Headlines As One Of 2025’s Best Games
Split Fiction is a new cooperative game from It Takes Two developer Hazelight Studios. It released on March 6, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and will join the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup on the console’s launch day, June 5, 2025. It tells the story of two writers, Mio and Zoe, who enter a machine that allows them to experience the worlds of their stories. The game features both fantasy and science fiction elements, and requires players to cooperate on a variety of tasks in order to survive and return to the real world.
The game received high scores and positive reviews from a number of outlets, receiving praise for its unique cooperative gameplay, varied landscapes both high-tech and fantastical, and heartwarming story about the power of imagination and the written word. Some critics are already considering it one of 2025’s best games, and wondering if it could earn a Game of the Year nomination – or perhaps even win, as Hazelight’s previous title It Takes Two did in 2021.
Split Fiction Is A Perfect Fit For The Nintendo Switch 2
Of the many games announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the April 2 Direct, Split Fiction stands out as a particularly good fit for the new hybrid console. As a co-op only game, it would be very easy for two players to play in the same room on their separate Switch 2 consoles, as, like the original Nintendo Switch, the console has both handheld and docked modes. Players can also use the Nintendo Switch Online system to play together when they are not in the same location.
One particular feature of the Nintendo Switch 2 will pair particularly well with Split Fiction: the new Game Chat system, which will allow players to communicate over voice chat while they are playing a game. A built-in microphone will make this communication available in both handheld and docked modes, and players can control Game Chat’s settings and functions using the new “C” button present on the right Joy-Con.
While Game Chat will ultimately require a Nintendo Switch Online account to use, Nintendo has decided to offer a free trial of the system until March 2026, which would give players interested in playing Split Fiction when the console launches plenty of time to use Game Chat while doing so. Split Fiction is a game that relies heavily on communication in order for players to succeed in its various challenges, so the Game Chat function will likely see heavy use among its players.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s launch lineup is extremely stacked, with over 20 titles currently confirmed for Day 1 release. These include Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, new Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Kart World, and more. Among this extensive list, Split Fiction stands out as an excellent fit for the Switch 2 console and a cooperative experience that has already been heralded as one of the best of 2025.
