Summary

  • Minecraft star Jack Black says he was “surprised” by the backlash towards the first Minecraft movie trailer.
  • It apparently shook him so much that now he doesn’t “trust myself anymore” when it comes to the movie’s quality, though he admits he personally loves it.
  • Director Jared Hess took the backlash as a learning experience, and attempted to release better trailers going forward.

The Minecraft movie is being unleashed upon us later this week, for better or worse, but it seems as though the general feeling towards it has softened ever since that cursed day when the first official trailer dropped. If you can recall, not many nice words were spoken about it, as it managed to amass over one million dislikes on YouTube in just a few days.

In fact, it was so hated that Steve actor Jack Black says he was pretty shaken by it, claiming that he actually loved the first trailer. Black said this in a recent interview with GamesRadar, in which he and director Jared Hess expressed their surprise at the negativity surrounding the first trailer back in September 2024.

“I mean, I was surprised, because I loved the trailer,” says Black. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to go over great’. And, you know, there’s always so many people that are sensitive to everything you put out there.”

Black goes on to say that he was so shaken by the reception that he’s now doubting the entire movie itself. While he says he “loves the movie” personally, he’s going to wait and see what other people think because “I don’t trust myself anymore”.

As for Hess, he says that the negative reception was more a learning experience for him, and admits that the first trailer had a lot of stuff “that was out of context”. This then apparently convinced Hess and his team to release a bunch more trailers with better clips to represent the tone of the movie a little better. Unlike Black though, Hess is pretty confident in the movie, and says that he’s had positive feedback from “die-hard Minecraft fans”.

However the movie ends up being received, I personally curse it for making me see a romance subplot featuring Jennifer Coolidge and a Minecraft villager, who we actually now know is voiced by none other than Matt Berry, thanks to the movie’s post-credits sequence leaking online earlier this week. Yep, a very cursed movie indeed.
