Undoubtedly one of the busiest filmmakers in the business right now, director Mike Flanagan’s TV adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel Carrie has received an exciting update with rumors that the Amazon Prime Video series has found its lead star to play Carrie White. Flanagan, who is known for Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and Hush, has a host of other upcoming adaptations that include the in-development “The Dark Tower“, the soon-to-be-released “The Life of Chuck”, and the currently untitled, The Exorcist movie.
Starring the talented Sissy Spacek and directed by Brian De Palma, the 1974 movie tells the narrative of Carrie White, a high school outcast who is mercilessly bullied by her classmates. Sadly, her life isn’t any better at home due to her mother’s unstable religious beliefs, which sees Carrie being abused by her relentlessly as she thinks her daughter is possessed by the devil due to Carrie’s telekinetic and psychic abilities. However, Carrie finally snaps, unleashing the darker side of her powers, especially against her high-school bullies and also her controlling mother. Another Carrie adaptation was crafted in 2013, which saw Chloë Grace Moretz as the lead and Julianne Moore as Margaret White but, unfortunately, it failed to live up to the original film’s stellar acting and plot, scoring a disappointing rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hereditary Star Milly Shapiro Rumored To Play Carrie in Mike Flanagan’s Adaptation
According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman (thanks CinemaBlend), Hereditary star Milly Shapiro is rumored to be in talks to play the lead in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie TV series. Richtman also says that Samantha Sloyan, who has previously starred in Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Life of Chuck, will star alongside Shapiro to play her religious mother, Margaret White.
At the end of last year, horror fans were excited to hear that Flanagan’s Carrie TV series is a lot further along than expected. Talking to fans on BlueSky, the director revealed that they were already 6 weeks into the writers’ room, which meant that development for the eight-episode Amazon series was traveling at full speed. However, at the time, a script for the show was still to be completed as well as who would be cast for different roles. Flanagan previously said that he has messed up before when revealing who he will be casting in upcoming projects, so fans might not hear which other actors will be joining the TV series until he is ready, but it’s very hopeful news, if the rumors are true, that Carrie may have already found its lead in Shapiro.
Even though an announcement regarding Carrie‘s release date will probably be quite a way off, fans can look forward to The Life of Chuck on August 22, 2025, and Flanagan’s The Exorcist when it arrives in theaters on Friday, March 13th, 2026.
