Megumi Ishitani Responds To Studio Ghibli AI Trend
Megumi Ishitani Was Not Happy With This Trend
Recently, a big trend has been making the rounds on social media. This trend has to do with the legendary Japanese movie studio known as Studio Ghibli. This studio is known for producing some of the biggest and most iconic movies in Japanese history, such as Spirited Away, or Princess Mononoke. Studio Ghibli has made many movies, and what’s eye-catching is that most of those movies follow a similar art style that is definitely iconic and recognizable.
This art style has become a trend on social media, but in a way many do not like or appreciate. The trend is to use AI to generate images with this Ghibli art style. Many people, including very big celebrities, have been participating in this trend.
Hayao Miyazaki, the biggest name in Studio Ghibli, who is largely responsible for its huge success, has expressed before his big dislike of AI. This is what he had to say once when it comes to AI:
This is an insult to life itself — Hayao Miyazaki
Recently, a huge name known in the One Piece fandom, Megumi Ishitani, had something to say about the matter. On her Twitter account, Megumi retweeted posts that criticize AI, and even said this herself:
“You’ve tarnished Ghibli… I’ll never forgive you…” — Megumi Ishitani
Fans can check out this tweet of hers here:
It’s unsurprising that someone like Megumi Ishitani wouldn’t be fond of AI, after all, her job is directly related to art that is turned into animation. She puts all her soul and effort into her work, and AI can’t replicate this same passion.

There is a huge ethical aspect that might also bother Megumi Ishitani, as people using AI are using Studio Ghibli’s art without permission. AI feeds on already existing art to work, which Studio Ghibli hasn’t given anyone permission to use. She would definitely not like someone doing this to her work, but people have been doing it to Ghibli’s work.
