How To Gain Magic Powers In The Sims 2: Apartment Life

The Sims 2: Apartment Life, which is included in the Legacy Edition, brings a little magic to your Sims’ lives with witchcraft, potions, and secret lairs. You might want to make your Sim the next Wicked Witch of the West and start terrorising Belladonna Cove with malicious magic and sinister spellcraft.

Or, maybe a life of benevolence is on the cards throughout your pursuit of pure potions, practical magic, or friendly familiars. No matter the kind of witch or warlock your Sim decides to be, there’s a lot to know about The Sims 2’s complex magic system.

How Do Sims Become Witches Or Warlocks?

Becoming a witch or warlock boils down to a few simple steps:

  1. Go to a Community Lot.
  2. Find a Grand High Witch.
  3. Befriend them.
  4. Ask them for guidance.

Sims must be at least Teens to be able to become a witch or warlock.

The witch will be immediately obvious: they wear a pointed witches’ hat and a matching outfit. The wicked witch is green and wears black clothes, while the good witch’s outfit is white and blue. They’ll sometimes have their familiar with them, too.

Once you’ve befriended them, you can ask them about their craft. If you’ve befriended the good witch, you can ask them to Teach Me The Ways Of The Light with a social interaction. The bad witch offers the Teach Me The Path Of Darkness interaction instead.

If you successfully use this interaction, the witch will cast a spell on you, imbuing you with new magical powers. A short animation will play while your Sim receives their new robes, a cauldron, and a spellbook, while a pop-up notification appears in the top-right corner.

Now that you’re magical, you can purchase a new spellbook or cauldron from your witch friends. A cauldron costs 870 Simoleons, while a spellbook will set you back 630 Simoleons.

Where To Find Grand High Witches

Witches appear on community lots near the public telephone. They fly in on a broomstick. Usually, you’ll only be able to find one at a time, meaning there’ll be either a good or evil witch there.

Already met a High Witch before? You could just call her up for a chat on the phone to save trying to find her again.

Sometimes you might have to go to a few different lots to find a witch. However, if they don’t show up in the first few minutes of you being there, they’re probably not going to show up at all, so you can be ready to move to a new location fairly quickly after arriving.

Good witches are a little more likely to show up during the day while evil witches seem to prefer to skulk around at night.

What Is The Difference Between Magic Alignments?

An overview of the spellbook including the witch skill and alignment.

Witches and warlocks can be aligned with good or evil. Which side they start off aligned to depends on which witch gave them their powers, but they can change alignment through their actions. For example, a good witch casting evil spells will slowly turn her evil.

Witches belonging to different alignments also have access to different spells and abilities, as well as having different outfits and secret hangouts. You can alter your alignment by studying the opposite one at the spellbook and practicing opposing magic.

Your Sim may also have a neutral alignment, where they play a little for both teams. This alignment is fairly different from the good and evil alignments because there isn’t a neutral High Witch or secret lot. You can get this by studying the spellbook.

You can check your Sim’s alignment by using the Check Abilities interaction on a spellbook. This will also show you a list of spells and reagents your Sim can make, alongside their current Witch skill level.

Witch And Warlock Outfits, Explained

Your supernatural Sim’s robes or dress reflect which type of witchcraft they mostly align with. Although there are two main alignments – good and evil – there is a four-point scale between them:

Alignment

Appearance

Infallibly good

White and blue robes/dress and hat; gold and blue aura.

Neutral good

Brown clothing and hat with gold trims.

Slightly evil

Black and purple robes or dress and hat with silver accents.

Atrociously evil

The same outfit as slightly evil, but with green skin.

How To Go To The Secret Magic Lots

Each alignment has its own magical fortress, which is kind of like an impressive, mystical clubhouse. Witches aligned with evil have the Fortress of Darkness, while those aligned with good magic have the Palace of Neverending Light.

Your Sim will automatically have access to either location, regardless of their alignment. The fortresses include space to use magical equipment, meet other witches, and buy reagents, as well as spaces to tend to their needs.

Witches and warlocks can visit the Fortress of Darkness or Palace of Neverending Light the same way they would visit another lot: by walking, using transportation, or flying on their new broomsticks. The lots appear in their own neighbourhood in the left column titled Magical World.

Only witches and warlocks can initiate trips to secret magical lots but they can bring along plus ones that are humans or other occults.

How To Use Your Broomstick

Witches and warlocks all receive one totally free method of transportation: broomsticks. This functions about the same as a car, helicopter, or taxi, but it has its own cute animation. Click on your Sim and select Fly To.

From here, you’ll follow the same steps you would when you were travelling in any other way. You select a neighbourhood from a column on the left, then the specific lot you want to visit on the right, and click the tick at the bottom of the box.

Surprisingly, you can still choose to bring guests along when you fly on the broomstick. There must be a lot of room on there.

How To Stop Being A Witch Or Warlock

If you don’t want to be a part of the craft anymore, then reverting to your mortal form is actually pretty easy. You just need to drink a Witchbegone-E potion, and you’ll be back to your un-magical ways before you know it.

You can buy a Witchbegone-E potion directly from a Head Witch of either alignment. Interact with the witch and look out for the Buy Potion menu. Select the menu, then choose Witchbegone-E.

The potion will be put in your Sim’s inventory, which is in the rewards panel. Take the potion and place it somewhere on a lot they own, then interact with the potion to drink it. Give it a few seconds and your Sim will be human again.

The potion will cost you 60 Simoleons, but you can bulk buy them.

How To Make The Witchbegone-E Potion

An overview of some of the spells and abilities available in the spellbook.

You can craft your own Witchbegone-E potion once you’ve earned your first witch skill point. You earn witch skill points by engaging with your magic and studying your spellbook.

With your first skill point, go to your cauldron and select Make Witchbegone-E.

When your Sim has finished brewing their potion, it will go straight to their inventory – the same as when they buy it from another witch. Drink it and they’ll go straight back to normal.

This method takes longer than buying it from a witch (presuming you can find a witch easily) but it saves you Simoleons as it’s totally free.
