There are a lot of systems at play in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, and many that the game never quite goes into detail about. Augments are one such mechanic. They act as upgrades that you can add to most pieces of gear for various effects, such as increased damage against certain enemies or increased TP gain.

Except sometimes you’ll get a piece of gear that you love, but it just doesn’t have many free slots. L has a solution to this, though it will take some doing before it unlocks. So here’s how to unlock L’s shop and get even more augments slots to make your build even more powerful.
How To Open L’s Shop
If you’ve participated in any of L’s heart-to-hearts, you’ll be aware he is a shrewd businessman, making a grand invention that really has no right to exist as the solution to a heretofore unheard-of issue. This naturally leads into his want to create a shop that can offer a solution to an issue the Blades of NLA didn’t know they had – limited augment slots.
To unlock this new mechanic. L has to first establish his shop, which requires completion of the Booming Business Normal Mission. This mission becomes available as soon as you’ve finished Chapter Five, and can be started by talking with Regina in Armory Alley, where she tells you about her dearly departed.
Despite L being a major part of this mission, it is just a Normal Mission, not an Affinity Mission, meaning you can complete it whenever you want.
According to Regina, they promised to get married after he had explored 30% of Oblivia, but died before he could do so. To help fulfill this mission and help with Regina’s shop, L offer to complete this task in her husband’s stead. So this is what you must do. After reaching a 30% survey rate in Oblivia, you can move onto the next stage of the mission.
To quickly raise your survey rate, plant as many Data Probes as you can, then collect the marked treasures, and finally defeat Tyrants in that order. Missions that will increase the survey rate can also be seen in the segment view on the map.
You must then gather up five pieces of Slimy Epithelium, five pieces of Strong Iron, and three Zedis Twigs. These will all be marked on the map, so they should be easy to gather up. Once you return them, L and his business associate, Giogion. They give you an Assault Rifle and task you with adding a new Augment slot to showcase their technology. From here on, L’s Shop is free for use on any piece of equipment.
How To Add More Augment Slots
The process of adding new slots to equipment is nice and easy. You simple go to L’s Shop and interact with the device. This will bring you to a menu where you can choose from your equipped items and unequipped items. From here, you just choose the piece of gear that you want to add augment slots to.
Just about every piece of equipment can have slots added to it, regardless of category or rarity. This applies to both your on-foot equipment, and that of your Skell. And rather than credits, this costs Miranium. This cost scales based on the level of the gear, meaning the higher the level of the gear, the more expensive it is to add slots to it.
That said, the price changes only based on level. So, regardless of your own level, the rarity of the gear, or the number of existing slots, the price will only change with the level of the gear itself.
Is There A Limit To How Many Augment Slots You Can Add?
With L’s incredible invention able to add even more Augment slots to every piece of gear, you must assume that there is a limit to just how many you can add. And sadly, there is. You can become more powerful, but not full-on unstoppable.
This limit is different depending on the category of gear. For example, weapons can have up to three Augment slots in total, while individual armor pieces (full body suits excluded) can only have one Augment slot. This isn’t a case of you being able to add three extra Augment slots, but that it can only have three Augment slots in total. If you have a weapon with two Augment slots by default, then you can only add one more.
