Nintendo has come out swinging with the Switch 2. The latest live event dedicated to showcasing what the company’s next console has in store was filled with major announcements. From confirming Mario Kart World as a launch title to even revealing that massive third-party games like Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to run on it, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be a huge moment for Nintendo.

It’s been eight years since the original Switch dropped, and in that time, users and fans have offered plenty of feedback. The Switch’s lifespan has been impressive, but missing like voice chat support have been prevalent in the discourse about how Nintendo can improve. Thankfully, it seems as though the company has listened to these critiques, as the showcase confirmed that the Switch 2’s mysterious C button is actually to toggle a chat feature aptly named GameChat. However, there is still one feature seemingly missing; an official achievement system.

Over the years, Nintendo has built a reputation as a brand that isn’t always interested in following the trends that other consoles are embracing, and the lack of an official achievement system is one of the biggest ways the company has stepped away from the status quo. What makes the Switch 2 so interesting, though, is that it’s showing a side of Nintendo that isn’t as averse to embracing things outside the company’s atmosphere.

The implementation of a chat button is proof that Nintendo is willing to answer to player feedback, but not including achievements further confirms that the company simply might not see a major benefit in making their own official system. Of course, there may still be more revealed about the Switch 2 that has yet to come to light, but as of now, a Nintendo-crafted achievement system may not be in the cards once more.

Switch 2 players can experience GameChat for free for a limited time. After March 2026, users will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use the feature.

Over the years, some developers have opted to build their own in-game achievement systems that make an official Nintendo feature unnecessary. Games like Fire Emblem Engage and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are just a few examples of Nintendo exclusives that can still scratch the achievement itch, and certain Switch 2 games are bound to continue this method.

GameChat users can also screen share, even if they’re not playing the same game.

Announcements like the Switch 2 exclusive FromSoftware game The Duskbloods, the many new features coming to Mario Kart World, and the ability for friends to share their gaming experiences with one another through GameChat are teasing a bold Nintendo era.

As of now, it seems like Nintendo is simply not interested in making an achievement system, but there is still plenty for gamers to get excited about. The Switch 2 adds to an already busy year for gaming, and its impending launch is sure to make waves.
