System Shock is a highly influential franchise that began in the ’90s, introducing players to an FPS action-adventure experience that revolutionized the immersive sim genre. In it, players explore a space station, taking on the role of a hacker attempting to destroy an AI. The franchise received another entry a few years later, System Shock 2, this time diving deeper into narrative elements and sci-fi horror themes. In 2015, System Shock 3 entered development under OtherSide Entertainment, but after a change in its developer, very little information has been revealed about the franchise’s future. Now, Nightdive, the studio that holds the rights to the first two System Shock games, has commented on the situation.

System Shock 3 is Being Developed Without Warren Spector’s Involvement

Warren Spector is not involved in the production and development of System Shock 3 in any way, shape, or form, according to a recent interview.

As reported by VGC, Nightdive’s director of business development, Larry Kuperman, spoke about System Shock 3’s development during the GDC, stating that the sequel is in a “very complicated situation.” Kuperman admitted that he is not entirely sure when the situation will be clarified, though he believes it will take at least a year or longer. The director explained that the studio is trying to do everything within its control. The last major update on System Shock 3 was that Tencent would be taking the System Shock franchise forward, meaning Warren Spector was no longer involved.

The System Shock 3 Situation May Take Over a Year to Be Resolved

Kuperman also addressed the upcoming System Shock 2 remaster—slated for release on June 26—and responded to fans’ concerns about why the studio chose to make a remaster instead of a remake. He explained that developing a System Shock remaster doesn’t mean Nightdive won’t pursue a remake in the future, though he can’t confirm whether or when that might happen. Nevertheless, he did confirm that “there’s going to be content coming out,” emphasizing that the studio has future plans for the franchise, particularly for potential stories set “within the first and the second.”

While players wait for the remaster’s release in June, there’s still a lot to look forward to in the System Shock dark sci-fi universe. However, they’ll have to wait a little longer to find out what’s happening with System Shock 3.
