Summary
- Tom Hardy has revealed there were plans for a Spider-Man and Venom crossover movie.
- The project was as close as it could be to happening without actually happening.
- Politics ultimately got in the way and now we may never see him and Tom Holland as their Marvel characters together on the big screen.
Sony’s web of MCU-adjacent Marvel movies is a little confusing. They’re in the MCU, they’re not in the MCU, and now, they might be done for good. Its run of Venom movies is almost certainly over now the trilogy is complete, which is likely why Tom Hardy feels comfortable revealing just how close we came to a crossover movie between his Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Speaking on The Discourse (via The Playlist), Hardy was asked why his Venom run came to an end without Eddie Brock and his symbiote ever having a run-in with Spidey despite the teases and the pair crossing paths countless times in the comics. Turns out Hardy’s children have been asking him the same thing.

The Next Spider-Man Game Shouldn’t Be About Venom, It Should Be About…
Venom probably won’t be playable in the next Spider-Man game, but a character very close to Miles might suit up soon
“We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun,” Hardy told The Discourse. As for why it didn’t happen, as you might expect, it was the complex studio politics between Sony, Disney, and Marvel that ultimately meant we never got to see Hardy’s Venom and Holland’s Spidey on the big screen together.
Tom Hardy On How Close We Were To A Spider-Man And Venom Crossover
Turns Out There Were Plans To Follow-Up On Those Credits Scenes
While it might be surprising to hear Hardy say just how close we came to there being a Spider-Man and Venom crossover movie, it won’t surprise most to hear the idea was discussed. The teases were not subtle. When Venom: Let There Be Carnage was released in 2021, its credits scene showed Hardy’s Venom being transported to the MCU. In the scene, Venom learns of Spider-Man’s existence when he sees a report about him on TV.
Two months later, in the credtis scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home, we pick back up with Venom in the MCU as he is sucked back through a portal and taken back to Sony’s Marvel universe. However, a small piece of the symbiote is left behind in the MCU. At this stage, it seems unlikely that breadcrumb will be followed up on, but you never know.
The build-up to the finale of the MCU’s post-Infinity War era is in full swing. It began with a viral cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday, and we now know that Spider-Man 4 will be called Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Even though Hardy’s run as Venom has seemingly come to an end, you can never say never in the MCU. Whether he’s played by Hardy or not, you have to think Venom will be a part of the MCU eventually.
