If you haven’t seen Apple TV’s Severance yet, you’re missing out. The drama, directed and executively produced by Ben Stiller, follows the mysterious story of the looming company Lumon and their not-so-ethical work practices. A subset of employees, led by Adam Scott, are known as the Severed, workers who have a chip implanted in their head that allows them to separate their work life and their personal life.

And the further we progress in uncovering Lumon’s secrets, the more we learn about each of the vast list of characters. Devon Scout-Hale

Played By: Jen Tullock

Devon looks to the side at dinner.

Mark’s snarky sister, Devon immediately won the hearts of many for her no-nonsense approach to life. She’s extremely vocal about her disdain for Mark’s choice to become Severed but still supports him as much as possible. She is also extremely compassionate and caring for Mark, going out of her way to take care of him multiple times.

She’s fiercely loyal to her family, both her husband and her brother, and this is shown multiple times throughout both seasons. But after being the one to make contact with Mark’s innie during the events of season one, she’s the only one to help outie Mark try to learn more about what he really does when he goes down to the basement floor. Hopefully, we will see more of her the further we progress in season two.

Asai Reghabi

Played By: Karen Aldridge

Reghabi looks up from the stooping down.

One of the key players against Lumon, Asai Reghabi is still a character we have a lot to learn about. While she’s been mentioned in passing, we’ve only recently started to see more of her in season two after appearing only twice in season one. Once a brain surgeon who created the chip for Lumon, Reghabi has now become one of the main people trying to take Lumon down by reintegrating Severed employees.

She, like Helly, is rebellious and determined to uncover what Lumon is doing. While her original reintegration on Petey didn’t work, she is now attempting to do the process again on Mark. The hope is that this time, it’ll go smoothly and with the help of Mark, the two can finally deal some damage to the company.

Seth Milchick

Played By: Tramell Tillman

Mr. Milchick smiling.

Although Mr. Milchick acts as the iron fist of Lumon to the Severed employees. He’s a complicated character that makes it hard not to like him. In season one, he’s one of the main villains, acting alongside Ms. Cobel, the cold-hearted acting manager of the floor. He leads the torture sessions in the break room and although he comes off as very friendly, he can also be manipulative and extremely intimidating.

And the further he progresses in his role in season two, he slowly starts to deal with his own internal conflicts about how Lumon sees him and if it’s worth all the trouble he’s going through.

5

Ms. Casey/Gemma

Played By: Dichen Lachman

Ms. Casey eerily looks forward in Severance.

Although all the Severed employees act a little strangely, Ms. Casey’s introduction is shrouded in the unknown that is Lumon. Acting as the Wellness coordinator for the team, Ms. Casey is extremely robotic, showing very little emotion as she shares outie facts with the innie. She’s very controlled and mechanic, looking detached from the other characters compared to the quick friendships that have been formed within the group.

However, after Mark’s innie successfully makes contact with the outside world by commandeering Mark’s body while at a party, he stumbles upon an old wedding photo of Mark and his wife. Only to discover that Ms. Casey, whom he knows on the Severed floor, is Gemma, Mark’s long-dead wife. It was an explosive reveal that is still being uncovered as we progress into season two.

4

Helly R.

Played By: Britt Lower

Helly R inspects a group photo.

While all the Severed employees have vast differences between their innies and outies, no innie is more different from their outie than Helly R. Helly is extremely rebellious from the start, even throwing a speaker at Mark in order to find a way to escape from the Severed floor. Most of season one is focused on her futile but bold attempts to leave, including threatening to cut off her fingers and almost killing herself in the elevator.

Helly shows that, despite being Severed, innies are real people with real feelings and have their personalities. But after finding out her true identity—the fact that she is the great-granddaughter of Kier Eagan and heir to the Lumon family fortune—who knows how Helly will further change and adapt in season two?

3

Dylan G.

Played By: Zach Cherry

Dylan talks with Mr. Milchick.

Another fan-favorite of the Microdata Refinement crew, Dylan is completely brash and extremely hilarious. One of the top performers at Lumon, Dylan is shown to have unlocked practically all the perks an employee can get once they hit their quotas. Finger traps, erasers, a music/dance experience—Dylan has practically unlocked it all.

He’s not afraid to say what he’s thinking, with some colorful language sprinkled here and there. But after a major reveal in season one, Dylan’s innie is recruited in a ploy to take down Lumon and learn more about the severed program.

2

Irving B.

Played By: John Turturro

Irving looks up at the sky in the woods in Severance.

Irving begins as one of the goodie-two-shoes of the group. He thoroughly believes in the words of Kier Eagan, the founder of Lumon and pioneer of the Severed program, and believes the ambiguous work they do within Microdata Refinement serves a greater purpose. After all, the work is mysterious and important.

But after a fateful meeting with another Severed employee in Optics & Design and the unfortunate departure of said employee, Irving fails to see the point anymore in anything they do. Even when he’s depressed over his romantic interest leaving, Irving finds the fight within him to help the others in their efforts to escape. He’s steadfast and fiercely loyal to his friends, making him a fan favorite.

1

Mark S.

Played By: Adam Scott

Mark smiles at his team.

The titular main character, Mark S., acts as the leader of the Microdata Refinement employees. After the loss of his wife due to a car crash, Mark’s outie (a term used to define the Severed employees on the outside) decides the only way to cope with the grief is to become Severed. This allows him to forget about his pain for the duration of the workday, seven days a week.

But since the beginning of season one, it becomes clear that some part of Mark doesn’t want to be there anymore. He uncovers a ploy to escape the office that his inne (a term used to define the Severed employees on the floor) had with a former worker and quickly devises a new plan at the arrival of Helly R. And hopefully, after being reintegrated, Mark will uncover more that lies below the surface.
