It’s April 1 which unfortunately means every time you see something that sounds too good to be true, you realize what day it is moments later and your heart sinks. That’s what will have likely happened to quite a few Sonic fans already today when someone created a clever rouse to fool people into thinking Sega released Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds out of the blue.

Sonic Stadium shared the news on Tuesday morning, but the news wasn’t what it seemed, something you’d have noticed had you read the reveal carefully. The post appears to reveal CrossWorlds has been shadowdropped and that you can play it right now. However, when you look closer, you’ll notice the L is missing.

While I rolled my eyes at what appears to be another annoying April Fool’s joke at first, upon further inspection, I discovered just how much work has gone into it. This wasn’t simply a case of Sonic Stadium removing the L and seeing who would fall for it. Sonic CrossWords is a real game you can play right now, and while Sega doesn’t appear to have had a hand in its creation, you’d be forgiven for thinking the studio itself was behind this joke.

Sonic CrossWords Fools Fans Into Thinking Sega Shadowdropped CrossWorlds

The Sonic Stadium-made site for CrossWords looks just like the official one for CrossWorlds, except on it, you’ll find a Sonic-themed crossword puzzle to complete. The crossword is described as being a demo with a description of what the full game would include if it actually existed waiting below.

While some Sonic fans who clearly haven’t noticed the original link doesn’t say CrossWorlds think they’re smart by declaring they won’t be clicking the link, those who have are now sharing their Sonic CrossWords times. Speedrunning what is, admittedly, a pretty easy crossword to complete if you’re a Sonic fan as a bit of April Fool’s Day fun.

If nothing else, it’s a nice distraction from the fact we still don’t know much about Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Sega ran a network test for its upcoming racing game, but it hasn’t given the game a release date. The latest update – and update might be a stretch – saw the official Sonic account responding to an Among Us request to be considered for the game’s roster. Sega confirmed characters from its other games will be on the CrossWorlds roster, and now it seems characters from non-Sega games might be up for consideration too.
